Hello,
Perhaps a banal question, so I hope you don't mind.
1) With future updates, is the synth a new install or does it overwrite the previous installation? So in other words, if it is a new install do you uninstall the previous version or will it overwrite the old version?
Thanks

The new DLL is named the same way as the old DLL, thus it will overwrite it. New presets/files with the same name are the same way, if you install to the same directory. It will not actively DELETE your old files, however, so if you had a folder in your Z2 preset directory called "My Presets" with 50 of your own sounds, made with Zebra 2, it won't be deleted when you install Zebra 2.1 - though you will now have new folders for the new Z2.1 presets.

I would suggest to _always_ backup your own presets to another location just to be safe, even though Zebra behaves like zircon said.

I wish we could define where our user preset folder was located myself. I keep a folder for all of my apps that contains the installer, updates, any related downloads for it, and all my own presets. So much faster doing backups when the presets folder in my backups is the 'active' user folder. I don't have to go hunting through folders looking for each manufacturer's preset locations.
Just my $.02.

On Macs, there is an OS defined standard location for it (with either global or user access).
On Windows, MS don't know anything about audio or these kinds of things and so leave the developers to put whatever they want wherever they want.
I like the fact that Macs have a lot of this stuff built in - timestamping MIDI events, virtual MIDI drivers, plugin directories for the standard formats and so on - you can do all that stuff on PC's, but you often need all kinds of utility software to do it...

I have always wondered about this- I have Zebra stuff installed in both my user and global files- which is the preferred place? It makes me a bit nervous to have duplicates. With other music apps, it seems that files are split 50/50 between the two locations.beej wrote:On Macs, there is an OS defined standard location for it (with either global or user access).

Do you understand why there is a Library folder in the root, and a Library folder in the root of each user's directory?
Root library items are available to all users. User/Library items are specific to an individual user.
If there is just one user on your machine, then the files can go in either and you'll see them. I like to have my stuff in the User/Library folders, as I can back my user folder and get most of my needed stuff in the backup. However, some software installs stuff to the root library and doesn't work if you move them to user, so you have to be careful.
Often what software does as well is install the *preset* material in the root library folders, and leaves the user/library folders for your own material. That way, you can update the application with all the application supplied presets without messing with your own patches - it keeps them separate that way.

I noticed this is exactly the way Zebra2 is BTW. I was like, why do I have 2 sets of U-he preset folders. Ah ha! Now I know why
