hmmm--I may have to pop open all those magazine sample CDs and DVDs that have been gathering dust.
This looks too good to pass up (miser that I am notwithstanding)

Too bad it doesn't sample. The way things have been going, I'll bet it doesn't have any form of sample editing or host drag-and-drop either.
Well, at least it's not called a "sampler"... YET.

Yup, from the news item:lordvader48 wrote:Too bad it doesn't sample. The way things have been going, I'll bet it doesn't have any form of sample editing or host drag-and-drop either.

W.Grabowski, the creator of Extreme Sample Converter (ExSC), has announced VSTi Sample Player (possibly not the final name), a new sample player VST instrument (presumably for Windows), expected to be released in February with the price to be announced.
How many people actually sample and/or edit samples these days?

+1. I almost never use a sample without editing or mangling it in some way. I also often record stuff with tapeit and then edit and load it into a sampler. It would be nice if there were more sampler's out there that actually sample. I know I am far from being the only one.Zombie Queen wrote:Here's one.Dominus wrote:How many people actually sample and/or edit samples these days?

Don't be so sure. I'm not saying that I know anything because I don't but ExSC has built in VST and hardware sampling. I'm guessing that if it's not in V1 maybe V2 will be a real nice paid upgrade. We can always ask for it. It's not like he'll have a lot of trouble writing the code.lordvader48 wrote:Too bad it doesn't sample. Personally, I think on a computer (as opposed to a single hardware unit) it makes more sense to have a division of labour between apps that enables each to attain a more developed feature set than is desirable, practical or affordable in one single app. I agree most "Samplers" do not actually sample (as in record audio) although whether they should really be called "Sample Players" when most also allow for mapping, slicing, timestretching etc too is another question. However I'm not really sure if I would want something that is already as complex and sophisticated as Kontakt 2 to have to have sample recording and editing built into it as well. If it was just basic recording then I would see it as a pointless addition compared to almost any decent audio recorder/editor from Audacity to Audition and Wavelab that can do so much more, and if it was more fully featured on the audio recording and editing front then I feel the app could just become more bloated and unstable. There are plenty of tools at our disposal for audio recording and editing, the products of which can then be loaded into a soft sampler for mapping and playback - I prefer to have a number of capable tools I can mix and match to one bloated jack of all trades app anyday. I think that is an advantage computers have over hardware - tools can become more specialised and designed to complement each other and ultimately that is more flexible and powerful.
Sure there are a few soft samplers that also record - I can think of Directwave, Creamware STS5000, NI Reaktor and EMU Emulator X for example - but the fact is that in all of these the actual adio editing is very basic compared even to freeware audio editors like Audacity and certainly no match for something like Audition I for one would prefer to use a dedicated audio editor to record and edit audio and then import it into a dedicated sample mapper and player for construction of the finished sample Instrument.

I'm happy with EXSC, although I question whether it (or the new VSTi sampler) will handle Kontakt monolithic libraries, Halion3 endongled samples, or ST2 format.
But other than those, there's very little it doesn't to

EXSC handles them though, doesn't it? I'd expect the sample player would too?I'm happy with EXSC, although I question whether it (or the new VSTi sampler) will handle Kontakt monolithic libraries, Halion3 endongled samples, or ST2 format.

Well, I didn't really think that everyone would chime in.
(I used to make and sell sample libraries myself.) But there's tons of people that like to load and play, which is why the romplers got so popular.

too little too late. already using wusik vst for all my "sampling" needs. yeah, I know, it doesn't actually "sample", but when you got an external editor, who cares?!
also, the gui sucks, they really need to improve that.
anyway, with the latest wusik updates, they do seem a bit behind things. not to mention the "great" support those "extreme" sampler guys have. like purchase page been offline for ages. humm... what does that tells about future support?

Nothing handles Kontakt monolithic libraries except Kontakt itself, which is why it's dominating all other samplers...
