It depends on the type of vocoding. Most of the time, when people say "vocoder", they're referring to a channel vocoder, which is usually what's used for that robot-voice sound. A channel vocoder is not a spectral processor, as it does not work in the frequency domain. Rather, it's a series of bandpass filters on the input signal that have their amplitude monitored in order to control the amplitude of another series of bandpass filters on the output signal.

A phase vocoder is spectral, and does the same basic thing as a channel vocoder, only with the FFT. However, phase vocoding is not used nearly as often...

Hey, I gave two. :x

that thing need to have multiple circles....
i sometimes compress something... open the compressed file .... compress it again... open this...compress and so on..
after 20 compression things really start to sound differently wierd and the outcome sounds cool ... sometimes ;-)
My Distortion is Analogue...

I think we're looking at this from different points of view. True, a channel vocoder is not operating in the spectral domain, but the net result is that the carrier signal gets the amplitude of various parts of its frequency spectrum modulated.
Incomplete list of my gear: 1/8" audio input jack.

I'm thinking it's going to extremely difficult to get exact mp3 degradation emulation.. I'm still trying to understand how (if I bit crush) I can retain the signals basic characteristics... It's either too low end or not enough for my taste...

bit crushing isn't going to get you anywhere. It's a completely different sound.

The only way to emulate it would be to have a streaming mp3 encoder as a plugin. It would reuqire some latency, but I'm sure it could be done. But mp3 compression is not simply bit-crushing, so that won't get you close.

Anticode (well, the original mWarpedLinearPrediction plugin) was designed for precisely that purpose - to allow variable (and hopefully musical) spectral degradation to a sound. Mp3/Aac are not linear prediction coders at their heart, but some slightly similar effect can be achieved with Anticode, especially if you assign a midi controller to the Synthesis Rotate control and start moving your spectral peaks around.

Sounds really interesting, autloc, I'll have a look :) Haven't used a fun spectral fuckerupper since I left Logic with it's Spectral Delay.
