How to use compositions?

Hi,

Only after importing a midi file I realised that a composition is kind of like a tab in Firefox or Excel. But what is the main idea behind it, how are people using it? And how do you initiate a new composition, I haven't found a way to do that?

Yes, I actually did, but I didn't find anything about compositions beyond "The arrange page is called the Composer, as it's used to create and edit Compositions. A Composition is a composition of Parts."

Sorry if I'm being dense, but could you direct me to the passage(s) where there's more about compositions?

Well, I'm not the OP, but if I was asking what I'd mean by this question is:

1) What's the advantage of creating a new composition and having it in the same session (i.e., file) versus having a separate session for each composition (i.e., song?)? Phrased differently: what value is there to having a relationship between songs and session files other than one-to-one?

2) How do you create a 2nd, etc., composition in a .musession? At present, if you right click on the composer you get menu items for composition properties, select next composition and to delete (the current?) composition, but there doesn't seem to a function anywhere to create a new composition so that you'll have a next one to select.

So right now, the notion of multiple compositions within a session seems like a placeholder for some future capability than something that's currently useful.

Well, I'm not the OP, but if I was asking what I'd mean by this question is:

All Compositions in the same Session share the same Racks, Sequences, Audio Files etc...

So one example of using multiple Compositions in the same Session is just different variations of a Composition.

Another important use of multiple Compositions in the same Session will be that you can build different sections of a song (= each time a composition) and then glue everything into 1 Composition, even in real time! This feature is planned for a future LUNA release!

That is correct.

Note though that importing a MIDI file results in a new Composition, so it does already work.

But many possibilities of having multiple compositions in 1 session is still to be opened up.

Thanks Jo for the answer, now I know to be patient and wait for all good uses I can put compositions to, in a forthcoming version!
