Thanks folks. Anybody know of anything interesting in the software arena?
Set Theory claim:
"In some cases there is an object called red that contains everything that is red. In much the same way a pot is a plate.
Red is Red and anything that is Red is an object, a class in itself or a real thing if you prefer"

I like this one: Rousseau/Chinese/"Jianpu" notation
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Numbered_musical_notation

Image

It displays the musical relationships very clearly, or at least a lot more directly than staff notation: the tonic is written simply as "1" for instance. (the system is also instant "numbered bass" too)

Not exactly a general notation system but this reminded me of the back cover of Brian Eno's Music for Airports:

what about all this "computer" music that seems to be so popular?
I'm interested in seeing the machine code of a ProTools/FL/Cubase project.
That is a REAL MAN'S notation system.

not sure if this is relevant, but there are a couple of ensembles in reaktor that use images as sequencers. in 'life' (one of the standard sequencers) you can draw a picture and the system makes permutations on it, and i know florian erdle and daniel battaglia have made some picture sequencers.

(Thanks jmeier; thos are in the same sort of direction Im heading in myself)

Prompted by Trevor Wishart's 'On Sonic Art', here's the first of a couple of examples of notation based on neumes...

This one is from Western religious chanting, and this use of neumes dates back to the 9thC or so

Wishart also has some examples of Tibetan Buddhist chanting notated with neumes, but I cant find an online example at the moment. I'll maybe scan one from Wishart.

ah, for lovely scores, check the pdf files posted at the bottom of brian ferneyhough's wikipedia page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Ferneyhough

that's enough to give a guitarist an aneurism, innit?

(btw: when he was in his twenties, rachmiel was one of ferneyhough's students, which is indirectly how i came to hear of mr. f)

Post

thats a point sean, i bet rachmiel would be good to point at this thread.
also not sure if any of the stuff hes written in cm may be of use?

It displays the musical relationships very clearly, or at least a lot more directly than staff notation: the tonic is written simply as "1" for instance. (the system is also instant "numbered bass" too)
I've played using this notation before. The disadvantages for rhythms using it were just too great for me.

I can only think of PWGL; it includes an interesting notational frontend called ENP.

theres a chapter in william russos "composing music, a new approach" called picture music, not overly indepth but for anyone interested in trying it out a great start(book also covers many more standard approachs so i would suggest it as a good all rounder too)

Thats bizarre; I just added that (and one called 'Music and Mathematics: From Pythagoras to Fractals') to my ever-expanding-list-o-stuff at Amazon.
