AT2 better be light years ahead of Amplicrude 1 because AT 1's sound is akin to two cats fighting in a back alley. At an Upgrade price of $249.00 AT2 better be several light years ahead of AT1.

So would you say it better be light years ahead of AT1?

Teksonik, I can guarantee you that AT2 is nothing like AT1, which I hated too. I'm not saying spend $200, but it is light years beyond.

Totally agree, I mean take a listen to Rammstein for instance, fizzy to the bone, but it suits the mood well. Also, putting drums and synths through it and putting guitars through it is as different as night and day . Even different guitars can sound soo different. I think finding the "right" [subjective] amp is almost voodoo-like and it's really hard to give the righ advice to anyone.

Like they say, your mileage may vary... :D

But generally speaking it's really helpful when someone tells you how some amp sounds, just in general, so you can narrow down the choice at least a bit... from, say, 4 to 3 :D [or 13 to 12 :D]

Cheers!

Yeah, this thread is a real testament to how radically different our tastes are with amps!! I really don't think there's any way somone could choose an amp sim based on our opinions. Like I said before, my guitar has such a specific sound, it only really seems to work with POD. Everything else is hit + miss (more miss).

You know, we should do a poll...did anyone ever do an amp sim poll?

I don't believe so. It'd be cool to see what amps people like the most. Excellent idea :tu:.

Make it so, Number 1. :D

Actually, I'm not doing it until we get a 100% comprehensive list. Those polls can be nightmares when you forget something.

You make a very important point, not all guitars are made equal. The guitar people are using makes up a huge part of the sound in my opinion so different amp sims do different things for people.

Thanks - I think it could be the missing link in this (healthy) debate.

Indeed an excellent idea! One could start with this old thread, the old 2005 ampsim-list HERE, but the guy who did it (I simply do not know enough of what's around on the market) had to, err, cut the list a bit additionally to add the new ones since that time, or we had to decide after reading through some pages...

I did not like AT1 much but I love AT2. They are completely different plugins IMO.

Holy shit! :-o I didn't think there were that many! "Polarity Tubester"!??!

Can you fit that in a poll?

Entire Galaxies ahead! :hihi: I'm like you, I've found "that" sound I've been looking for all these years except mine is on the Johnson J Station. Everything else in software that I've tried falls far short.

But when we think about it how many different sounds does a guitarist really use? Even if you play in a cover band with a wide range of material you only need a certain number of distinct sounds. I've known guys who can stomp on a ProCo Rat and play all night without ever changing settings-and rock da house. We may want our sounds to go from Metallica to Stevie Ray to Satriani but then a lot of that has to do with the different guitars in use and a LOT to do with individual talent (I'd love to sound like SRV but even if I dial his tone in perfect in AT2 my guitar still won't sound like that worn out strat and I sure as hell don't have a fraction of the talent needed to play like SRV). I guess what I'm saying is does the average player really need 50 amp sims and 50 Cab sims etc? I can see a studio needing that wide range to cover all their client's needs but......

So AT2 is really that far advanced from AT1? I'd love to give it a go but I hate installing demos on my music computer and for the upgrade price I'd rather buy hardware.

Post

you seem to be in a similar space as me: you prefer hardware (I can't imagine sacrificing all that CPU power too!), I doubt you'd be swayed by AT2. And that's a great point you make: I've often laughed at myself because I use almost exclusively 2-3 models on the POD! "Black Panel" for clean, the Soldano for dirty, and the Mesa for saturated. Nothing else seems to take as well.

So do I really need 20,000 amp models? Probably not! Best save my money and put them towards better speakers, more RAM, faster MoBo... :D

Stevie pretty just plugged his Strat directly into his Twin, turned the gain all the way up, and played.

The average player wants one or two. The trouble is, two average players tend to want a *different* one or two.

Sorry, James. Stevie's sound is much more complicated than that!
