Is Stairway to Heaven also 70's prog rock? (Sorry for the dumb questions, but I'd hate to come up with a great rock song that's not prog or 70's enough)...

Off course it is.

As opposed to the selfless, unbiased crap we know and love ?

I have never fully trusted wikipedia; as such Disco, and especially anything resembling the Village People will be considered progressive rock in my book ;)

Peace,

Hmmmm...
So if I do a key change or tempo change every four measures or so I should be ok yeah?
Anti-aliasing is for "synthmonk%ys".

Post

Hmmm.....
Now how do I squeeze Thick as a Brick into 2 minutes...

Oh, yeah, you have the skills...

This is going to be a good month. Even if I have no chance to climb higher in the final results, we'll end up having great prog songs to listen. For me, it's better than a good classification :hyper:

The other side of the coin is that many people here must bend their own "modern" style to a more dated genre :hihi:

Cheers

I saw the Thick as a Brick Tour back in 72 or so.
At the time, the tune took over half the concert.
Oh, the concert was over 3 hours long. It was like being in heaven.

I can only butcher the genre, right? I think it's pointless for me to enter this month heh.
TBH with the right (wrong) vocals on top of this, you would have a good Punk song

Now change the type of drum sound to full reverb rock drums and trow a bit strings on top of that and you can call it prog rock :)
Kara, it only sounds moderately good because the orignal is so good :D
(adn too bad punk isn't the theme, I should be able to manage that type of music as I started out in a punk band when I was 11, our first song was called "Born as a punk" ;-))

Hey scoops, can we people who play acoustic guitars and addictive drums demos resort to "personal interpreations" of prog rock? :hihi:

To Scoops,

is the theme "Prog Rock as it sounded in the 70s"

OR

"70's style Prog Rock as it sounds today" ?

(maybe I can do some Kraftwerk afterall :hihi: )

Great song, you're my #1 until now. But - all craziness on a stick ;) - it sounds good, and really 70's.

I'd suggest going for the sound of the 70's rather than that of today.
Remember, the name of the theme this month is "Flashback - The 70's"

..."personal interpreations" of prog rock? As long as you make it sound like it came from the 70's :hihi:

For what it's worth, I think this is going to be a great month. We have some very talented people here. I fully aknowledge this will be a difficult beast. But other options to the 70's were Disco, Funk, Billboard Top 100, and so on, well, it just didnt seem right for this group. On the other hand, Genesis, Yes, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, ELP, and so on, all came of age in this decade. It doesnt seem to be a stretch for the talent pool here to emulate this music

I'll also have to give Duncanparsons a +1 on his post earlier in the thread. I think it's a pretty good insight as to what Prog Rock is.

Good Luck!

Flashback - The 70's

Ah yes, The 70's I remember them fondly. Lots of great music came out of that era.
