Preset Changes?

wondering how people handle this... most DAWs store the used patch info with the file, and i do like the freedom this has given plugs with folder-based storage of patches. but i miss being able to send patch change info to these plugs.
we use Live, and ironically, playing live with Live is where we are having problems. we can't deal with the downtime of loading new files between songs (this is a nono in live PA land), so we have resorted to creating a single file out of all our songs for live gigs. this has some benefits (transitions are seamless), but a huge drawback is changing patches... a fumbly, manual process. ugh.
so how do people here deal with this? am i missing something fundamentally simple?
since most of what i use these days comes from u-he, i am hoping that some way of the plugs receiving or dealing wiht patch change info can be developed. maybe a certain "blessed" folder for patches can be addressed, or a certain patch naming convention.
any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

so you are saying set up instances of the instrument in the rack chain, for each place i need a patch change? i'll give that a try, thanks!pdxindy wrote:If you have Live6 you can use Live's racks and just turn on and off what you need as you need it. You can automate that too.

Yeah... You will have to do some experimentation. It does work, but too many chains in one rack might become unwieldy, so you might use a few racks on different tracks. I don't know what the better workflow would be, but you can do it for sure.amoeba wrote:so you are saying set up instances of the instrument in the rack chain, for each place i need a patch change? i'll give that a try, thanks!pdxindy wrote:If you have Live6 you can use Live's racks and just turn on and off what you need as you need it. hey pdxindy - just to let you know, your suggestion is working great! i was afraid loading 16 zebras into a single track/rack would bog my sh*t down, but as long as only one (or maybe a few) chains are playing, things are good. really good.
note: i had to make use of that chain zone control stuff to get my patch changes working how i wanted, but now i have that mapped to a macro, and can zoom thru all my best Z2 patches with a single knob twist (and x-fading to boot)! thanks for pointing me in that direction - i've learned more about Live in the last 24 hours than i have in the last 4 months! me happy now.

nice tip!
Thought I'd try to build a 'preset change' rack of my own... am almost but not quite 100% successful yet.
I've gotten the basic functions working: a rack loaded with Z2 chains, and a macro knob mapped to the Chain Selector to crossfade between them (using chain select zones to make each one respond to midi across a limited range). That part works just fine.
What I haven't figured out yet is how to also turn each of the zebras on and off at the same time when their zones are 'active'..... unfortunately the Device On/Off button doesn't have a range setting, nor does it seem mappable to a specific limited range... it always goes on when the knob is at 64+, off below 64....
What am I missing.....?
amoeba, if you wouldn't mind sharing, how did you map the on/off switches for each of the zebras? Were you able to make it so only one (or a few) might be "powered on" and playing at any given time? And mapped those on/offs to a macro in synch with the 'preset change'?
Would love to know how!

i need to, because after i got the whole thing set up using this method (16 "songs", each with 2 Z2's and 2 FSVA's, and 16 patch changes for each) things have started to bog down. i am sure getting the instruments off would help, even if they are not "active" as far as Live goes.
you CAN map the intrument on/off, but it does not seem to be a part of the chain select action. need to figure this out. i will keep plugging away, let me know what you find.
if we need to take this backchannel, let us know... we are not really dealing with any u-he limitations at this point!

Unfortunately, you cannot map the instrument on and off range so they would all be at 64... otherwise that would work...
A workaround is to make a rack, and that rack has say 4 racks in it. Each of those racks has 3 Zebra chains.
You can then map each of the 4 racks on/off to a switch on your controller. This way you are only turning on 3 Zebra chains at a time and using your controller knob to switch/blend between them.
This works fine, though not es elegant as one might desire...

so far:
- yes, can assign midi control to on/off, but limited range (+/- 64)
- yes, can also automate on/off...
- will try another rack with some on/off assignments, see if I can get some "external" control or macro to swing those in cascade from a single knob... doubtful, but macros controlling macros is easy enough in Racks...
- will continue to apply brain-magic and tribal-logic to the thing until I find a way... cos it's too cool a concept not to make happen!

you could set something like that up in Bidule...
also, if you have a bunch of buttons on your controller, you can set up each button to toggle a chain on and off. It helps if you have led indicators on the buttons so that you can tell the state.
Then it is easy to play a couple chains as layers or switch between presets. With the buttons you cannot fade between them, but otherwise works well for switching presets
