Hi all general question, has anyone been opportuned to have the same setup run on a Rev A and a Receptor Pro? I would like to ask the following questions;

Firstly, how much of a performance boost did you really get? Maybe you could say in terms of CPU headroom or just an indication of where the CPU level was peaking on Rev A in comparison to Receptor Pro.

Secondly, do they both use Receptor Software version 1.5?

Hi Phil,

I can't give scientific comparison (as I did not have both in front of me at the same time).

I did just upgrade two (Rev B) Receptors to Pro. Both were running 1.5 before and after upgrade.

My subjective perception of performance is that I got something like a 30-40% boost. Some 'heavy' plugs used to cause frequent peaks (eg. OB-X, Kontakt2, ...) now only cause occaisional peaks.

I used to have crashes in Kontakt2 when trying to load *very* large library sets (eg. LPC guitars, ...) and now these run on a Pro better than my P43.0g PC.

Overall, I haven't finished my determination of improvement, but I do feel that there is a pretty substantial boost in system performance.

You'd have to judge on your own whether this amount of boost is worth the money. For me, I'd say it seems so.

Hey looneytunes, I think I get the general gist, I am not sure what kind of setups you normally use, but I have a default patch which loads, Kontakt 2, going to two channels, one channel normally has a steinway D patch and the other some string fx patch, I have atmosphere, one track running epiano and four tracks of Stylus RMX. This normally eventually crashes the receptor, depending on the day and the CPU meter is always peaking or near peaking, do you have any similar setup that you could compare this to?

Hi Phil

I believe I have all of those. Give me a day (or two) to try this out, and I'll report back.

I suspect that you might see some disk issues with the Kontakt/Steinway (depending on how much activity is there). In general, the Pro does not really improve any disk performance, and will be limited by the same DFD performance as in previous revs.

I just compared a Rev.B (1280MB RAM, sys 1.5.20060418) with a new Pro-400 (2048MB RAM, sys 1.5.20060504). Both machines at 44.1KHz sample rate with buffer size at 128 samples.

Each channel was loaded with MicroSynth, Classic EQ, Classic Chorus, and Classic Reverb.

On the Rev.B, 8 channels resulted in a CPU load of 80%.
On the Pro-400, 8 channels resulted in a CPU load of 55%.
On the Pro-400, 13 channels resulted in a CPU load of 80%.

Perceptions

The only time I heard any artifacts (buzzes, clicking) was when I had RMX in Freerun, and I was loading an instrument into Elektrik Piano or Kontakt.

During normal play, I did not notice any 'jumps' (eg. lag after keypress 'till sound), nor any perceptable latency.

There was some spikeyness to the CPU peaks, but it never looked like the CPU was pegged at 100% for a noticibale amount of time.

I would imagine if this setup were used with a sequencer, my test would look like more of a 'torture test', because you probably would not trigger the same chords on 3 vstis at the same time.

Overall, I was fairly impressed at how smoothe this test went. I was expecting more DFD artifacts from Kontakt.

I hope this helps you and others make your decision.

Again for me, I feel that there is some good performance improvement from the upgrade, and there were large Kontakt sample sets that I can now load and play (that was impossible on the older configurations).
