jakob wrote:I like the bass line itself, but the sharp impact of each note doesn't quite gel with the rest somehow (check the peaks of the waveform). I don't know if I can smooth that with a plug (compressor?), but could I ask you to play it smoother somehow (not a guitar or bass player, so I don't know the technique needed here)?

Also, at the end those pulsing quarters make it build up, so I really want another bass line that sort of picks that up. That doesn't mean everything full off quarter-notes, but just some contrast to the bit "open spaced" feel of this take. So, can you record one take like that that goes from beginning to end?
I'll try playing it with my fingers which I think should make it smoother. Although I am not used to playing that way at all so it may suffer in other ways.

Not sure what you mean by the other comment. Are you saying to others that it would be good to do a bass line that carries on the momentum of where mine ends? Or do you want me to do one with the same feel all the way through?

I would like you to play another bass line with the same feel throughout and a bit more momentum. Sorry for being unclear.

Ok, I'll give it a shot over the next week sometime.

sure, gimme the drums! Give me some variation though, so I can build it during the length of the song.

I really like what morelia's already done :)

I'd offer to play the piano part on a real piano, but my mics are getting fixed

I've sent a new bass track to you. Let me know if it is more what you are after. Or if it totally sucks. I can take it.

@Watto: oh of course I want your piano part, but without those mics... I mean I was really impressed with your last recording, I didn't apply any effects to it and it just sounded perfect for the mix. Can't you just play it midi, or is that below you, haha :D

@morelia: That bass part is good. Sure, it's a bit more "boring" than the other one, but that just makes it perfect for looping over and over and over ;) If you can, give me one more take for variation's sake. I think I will keep the 1st bass part with your guitar solo, it fits so well with it.

So, cough cough, where are all the other solos? No softies here? Give in to your longings for sweet muzak and jam awaaaaaay! :D

*note to self* will do the blues thing next....

Hey jakob,

To be honest, I'm not really set up for midi piano, as I only have a crappy Evolution keyboard, and my Triton LE88 would barely fit in the studio as it's set up currently :hihi: Hopefully I'll get the mics back soon!

On another note, I reckon you'll find that the more of these you try to do, the less response you'll get - I'm not exactly sure why, and it's disappointing, but that seems to happen. Maybe if you started a blues one but got someone else to start it, making them the creative starting point? That could be the reason people tire of group collabs always being led by the same person

Hey Watto,

hope those mics are done soon, but I'm in no hurry, so whenever you can, I know it'll be worth the wait. :)

Also, no worries about the disappointing responses here, it's always hard to reach the masses (after all, several hundred have looked at the thread, haha). Anyway, I like the song enough that I will finish it even with very little participation. I find it very inspiring :D

That being said, Hellbilly has graciously helped out by providing some much better drum tracks. Here's a first mix with them:

Oh, doesn't that just make you feel so .... good? :D

Of course, any comments on improving the mix are always welcome. Not sure if the drums are a bit loud in the mix as I'm listening to it right now. Your feelings?

Some crappy rhodes uploaded. :tu:
Feel free to destroy it in any way, jakob.

Sweet stuff, gsoto, thanks!

The bass and guitar parts I played are not in the original position I played them. I think they are 1/8 late or somewhere around that. To me it sounds off but that may be because I played it. What do you think?

I'm interested in adding solos to songs and all that, but I'm just a pentatonic pauper. I can't seem to produce anything worth a crap over this song. I'll keep trying, but I have to admit, I'm flailing.

morelia-- much of the time, it sounds off. Sometimes it sounds funky, though. Some creative editing could go a long way! (eg. keep the happy accidents that sound good, shift the rest back to being in-time)

Same thing here. Although I have delusions of something grander. I think it all needs to be shifted back and it sounds like you agree.
