I've tried that in the past, but my list often gets wrecked by something submitted at the last minute, so lately I don't even try to sort a list until the voting thread opens. Damn lazy last-minute submitters, making my life tougher. :P

Based on the voting history of the past couple of contests, I'm not sure submitting late hurts ones chances; a lot of late submitters end up doing pretty good, IIRC.

Ouch! :dog: This month is sooo hard to compile a top-ten...
There are 22 songs on my shortlist and I love this music... don't want to let anyone out...
My reward will be a fine cd-r prog collection

btw thanks to Farlukar, Groovesys, mmichalski59 and Jonny Quest for the votes, I appreciated it

Cheers

Maybe I'm a jinx
Have you not thought about trying Kara-Moon. They gave me a nice little artist page over there for free!

Indeed. And a bit unexpected. I'm sad I didn't have time to make a real, proper contribution this time. I have pointed a few friends to the Markleford Radio this month... :D

Ah! Votes! Thanks, Mello and Freeztar! I thought I was going to end up with a big fat zero this month! Now I can just TASTE victory! :hihi:

I want to vote but I can't
I applied the most strict criteria but my winamp list doesn't get any shorter than 17 items. Some of you have achieved THE sound and style of the era with unbelievable accuracy while retaining artistic integrity. Others gave us small little gems that may sound intentionally different but carry over the prog rock spirit and move to other directions. How can I decide?

btw thanx for all those votes
If I go insane, please don't put your wires in my brain

I have the same problem as Laguna and Zeoy -- about 25 entries in the short-list, after cutting many quite good tunes based only on the "Prog-rock" criteria.

I'll give it another go today.

Hmmmmm....I'm afraid I may have screwed up with my long guitar intro...it doesn't sound really proggy until about 1/2-way through....sigh....

My votes are in: gotta hop a plan to Boston for a friend's wedding over the weekend and might be stranded from convenient net access for a bit!

But I wanted to thank everyone for the authentic entries, and my sympathies to those who were too young to be familiar with the period but tolerated our old-folks fun anyway. ;)

I'll be back Tuesday after the dust has settled...

Khepira, your 7th vote "In one sixtieth" is Groovesys.
I just helped out with the guitar and bass but Groovesys did everything else.
I'm making this prominent because i don't want people to think i would lower my standards and actually write a prog rock song, hence my dynamite disco song.

Thanks Man! I was going for the Allman Bros sound but that's close enough for Rock. Right?

Not that anyone really cares, but here's my two cents. And damn were there alot of entries this month. This was probably the best contest yet. Not that I've been around long...

Marc JX8P - You've done your research. Doesn't sound entirely 70's, but who cares?

Legion Hush - Definately disco, from the strings to the bass to the shitty lyrics.

kara - Maybe it's a progressively classical games soundtrack from the late 80's.

Shane Sanders - I love the opening sounds, but isn't it a bit too hi-tech for the 70's, but I'm only 20 so how would I know?

Echo Voodoo - Beautiful atmosphere in 8-bit. Nowhere near prog rock, but severley late 70's Kraftwerkian.

Khepira - Delicious drumming. I like the use of various intruments. Very prog. Not very 70's, thank God.

groovesys - Now this sounds more like it. Progish, rockish and 70ish.

Patrick9 - That crazy intro drumming kicks ass! Definately prog. The guitar and synth help too.

core - Not really prog rock either, but it has a lovely vintage character. Very smooth.

duncanparsons - Very ecletically prog. Could even be that poncy IDM if it was twice as fast and had samples from a car crash or something.

offthewall - Classy guitar. The flute makes it super-prog. Or misplaced jazz...

Jonny Quest - Those drums are good. It sounds like a Steve Vai rip off. Therefore, its good.

Nils_B - Progressive folk music? Maybe. Entertaining though, unlike gypsies.

Hovmod - Very dystopian (I've been trying to use that word for weeks now, so thanks for making this song).

tconrardy - Prog from start to finish. I love the sweeping. Very clean.

sttjelle - Jeez, I thought it was going to be prog metal for a second there. Wishful thinking.

Gucky - More kick ass drumming. Annoying synth though. And not very rock.

Xnah - Slow tambourine + flutey thing = medieval folk music. Nice singing though. Good atmosphere.

mmichalski59 - Very 70's. Maybe too conventional song structure. Maybe. I don't go to music college so how should I know.

Dunks - Scratchy background = 70's. Were vocal samples from 60's news shows big in the 70's?

streifentier - I like the way the guitar sound plays around like its in a sandbox.

nikp2000 - Nice use of an anti-climax there. Although, it was pretty proggy.

Barnadine - WHAT THE f**k! I love it. I would've voted you first.

me109 - Not really rock, but very interesting to listen to. Sounds 70's.

Beardedone - Very mellow. I love the upbeat thingy in the middle. And the prog guitar.

peppy197 - More experimental than progressive, but really, whats the difference? Musicianship? Thats why I'm experimental.

Fritz Fiedler - Good title. Almost familiar start. Almost a audible horror story. Actually, it is. And 'experimental' too.

chimpuat - Mutilated cattle eh? That earns you brownie points. Bass has disco moments though. Bad bass. Bad.

scotthagel - Far too simple for prog rock, but definately not pop music.

Ixox - Flutes are very prog. Super-prog in fact. Interesting drumming too.

Laguna Rising - Jazzy start with no clear direction. I think that could be called 'progressive'. Maybe.

oddbods finger - Electro-prog. Totally 70's! I love this... and its shit-house lyrics.

mikewelch7 - f**king AWESOME! f**k the time limit, that kicked ass!

Sepheritoh - Great mood. Maybe a little too classical, but thats like your thing, isn't it? Well it should be. Buy a cello.

jplanet - Badly mastered, but thats a skill practically no-one can do. Pretty damn cool otherwise.

Emerald Tablet - A cover, yeah? That or someone owes you royalties. Maybe too simple. I don't know, I suck at this.

Max el Belga - Complex, eclectic, progressive. Another proto-IDM tune. I like how it jumps around and can't decide what to do with itself. Very cool.

liqih - Another beautifully eclectic piece. The SNES sounds are cool, as are the complex rhythms.

scamme - Maybe too simple? Very laid back though, so it's 70's.

zeoy - Flutey = prog yet again. Sounds very authentic, I like where it slows down and goes all sweepy. Mind-bendingly awesome.

jamesb - Yeah, rock that organ brother! Sounds 70's. Nifty drumming too.

jer1224 - Now that's cool drumming. Love the synth after the guitars, thats crazy.

stressed - Neat drum sounds. Almost good singing. Maybe too simple? f**k I've said that alot. Damn, I should've entered. Fate had other plans though...

Markleford - I love the lyrics. You should write childrens books. I'm still falling off my chair with laughter. Music was damn good too.

mellotronaut - 80's style singing. 70's style organ. Very 'progressive' (read: left-of-centre).

farlukar - Interestingly complex. Deceptively simple. A beautifully sung head-twister.

papatomany - Another classy thought-melter. Do you guys spend the month brooding and just throw it all up on the last day or what?

magog - And the last one has... f**king flute again. Prog? Yes. Jeez I'm so glad I missed the 70's. Oh, and the track is
pretty darn nifty too.

Pity I suck at real music. Mind you, I've never really heard much 70's prog, so this list is, once again, pointless.
