That reminds me: when I submit my album for mastering (soon), should I consider upsamplimg my files with Audiomove/r8brain as discussed, or would that be a mortal offense to the mastering engineer? I guess I should only do that if I had done some final stem mixing at 96k, correct?

Ask him. depends entirely on the studio. not all of them can accommodate 96khz gracefully.

Isn't the idea to bounce the project @ 96khz in the first place so that plugins process at that freq rather than bouncing @ 44.1 and then upsampling?

That's the ideal situation. But the idea is for mastering, you can use a top-notch SRC to upsample your mixdown, then your mastering plug-ins will run at oversampling-quality, and you'll get a better master.
