for drums/percussion i would highly recommend getting battery 3 + the synthetic drums library. battery 3 can do the mangling/efx and synthetic drums is such an incredible library of weird but super high quality single hits. fastest/easiest/most creative way to make weird drum sounds IMO. worth every penny for the amount of time it saves you.
synths you can probly go freeware, as mentioned there is no rules. if you need an arp for more ebm type stuff albino is nice there.

I agree on the ALBINO recommendation,
I simply love the fact that there
is a layer function that allows you
to layer up to 4 patches, and you can then edit each sound in the layer independantly
but watch that CPU hit..I have created some really cool sounds using the layer feature.

as far as drums...you can use the layer function in ALBINO to create
a beat and then edit each sound as well
and can create some interesting sounds that
way.

Well I would recommend these Tools for some seriously awesome Industrial music production.

Some Voltkitchen Synths and some distortion FX and.... a Free Drum machine with a FM synth for Bass. If you want to buy stuff, get Native instruments Massive for your synth, you wont be disapointed.

Throw in some angst,depression and anger and presto! you have industrial music!

@xaviero: I'd never seen Voltkitchen until you mentioned them.... their synths look fantastic. I'll test them this weekend.

@Casar1973: I'll let you know what I find with these.... but I suspect you'll find them very good. There are other emulators of both the Arp and the Minimoog out thee, but they are either not very good or very expensive. If these do prove to be solid machines then they will be invaluable to you. Both machines are still highly valued by many studios and artists and very hard to come by.

Voltkitchen rocks...their memorymoog new one also sounds nice to me...although this version is killing my cpu at 10 per cent with rapid notes and im on a core 2 duo 6400 with 2 gigas..

If you want Nord and Virus style sounds then check out UHEs Zebra2. It can create some nice Absynth style sounds too.

its $200 though... but if you find a copy of computer music, they have a CM version of Zebra you can get with the magazine!

Ok, another cool freebie in Propellerheads Rebirth!

You can rewire it into your daw for some cool TR-808 & TR-909 sounds! It also has a good TB-303 synth sound and its incredibly easy to use!

How has no one mentioned the Darkware stuff? Search and you shall find. Plenty of jems there. That and Kontakt for it's library and ability to bring in your own banging should do it. For inspiration go to a Neubauten show and watch a bunch of Germans bang on airplane jet engine parts. Amazing.

Also, ANYTHING from Ohmforce.... expecially their new Ohmicide plug in. It drips with Reznoresque tone. Reminds me of the time I bought the Fragile remix album while waiting for a car stereo to be installed at Good Guys in Emeryville CA. When I returned to see if my car was ready Trent was shopping for Plasma TVs there. I wanted to ask him to stop f**king with me, but I thought better of it and just nodded. Good times.

I know for myself I haven't tried either of these devolopers yet.

Ohmforce is outside of my current budget for synths. Darkware, I just don't know at all. I will try to find some time for the line in the next little while. After all what's not to love about hentai synths.

Actually if your budget is low, then I would I highly recommend you get the Korg Legacy Collection. It has the MS20 which is highly regarded and used by Front Line Assembly. It also has the Polysix and wavestation which could be equally great if mangled just right. The Legacy Edition also comes with the MDE-X and a Hybrid synth that puts the polysix and ms20 together as one masive 5 vco synth with great FX! Ive seen the legacy edition in stores for about $200 at the very most! And did i mention they sound 100% like the originals according to many many reviews! The legacy edition scored a perfect 10 in the computer music magazine as well which is hard to get, because they are a picky lot!

For distorted Drums, nothing is more Reznoresque than running Waldorf Attack through your fave amp modelling program. If you can, try to find the Waldorf Edition which has Attack, and the PPG wave which has a nice industrial sound to it. I personally swear by Attack being run through Trash, is the most grungiest drums ever. It sounds like it was ripped off of reznors new album Year Zero as samples!

For a cheap yet great distorted bass sound use Novations Bass station, and run it through trash!!

The thing to get out of all of this is that there is no such thing as a VSTi that is good for "Industrial" sounds. Or maybe I should have said there is such thing as a VSTi that is not good for "Industrial" sounds. It's all up to the chump who is using it.

Coming from Bones (one of my favorite devolopers) that's a darn fine piece of wisdom.
It's all about what works for the individual.

On that note: I've tried out the volt kitchen stuff.... love the minimoque, didn't gel with the Arppe2600. Great synth, not my cup of tea.

Ok now. I see that lots of you know about industrial, so let me ak you one question: I try to make the drum sound (especially kick), that is heard in many industrial releases, such as suicide commando's:construt-destruct- hellraiser and grendel's:medicide
Is there any vst that can make this sound? Any recomendations on the effect-chain that i should use?

for true industrial sounds (i mean sounds imitating industrial machines, such as hoppers and punches, turbines and pneumatic hammers)- you need this sampler
