Unless the DIY ideas are also for fun, you might wanna try the M-audio.

Not sure the response on the padkontrol though, but I'm hitting pretty soft and hard on my tests, and it still registers.

Good luck either way.

EDIT: I see in your OP that you want *no* PADS, but if this is because of the problems you described (too hard/too slow), then my post still may be helpful. (Hopefully)
ok fair enough - youre right.....i guess im assuimg that all drum-pads are created equal and they might not be.

ill have to try out the m audio.

by the way, how is the spacing between pads?
is it a big space? (hopefully not too much cause if it was then that might be an issue if i have to stretch two fingers appart too much.

99% of the time, im playing with 6 fingers total: index, middle and thumb of each hand.
(rarely ill throw in the last two fingers into a fill for jokes, but my main concern is to have the ability to capture the 6 mentioned above)
thumb always is bass drum
middle always snare
both middle and index also double for hats and/or double bass-drum
and so the really fast rolls and fills are usually done with the index and middle (hence why the pads need to be pretty close together)

so far every type of pads/keys/qwerty have not been able to keep up with recording the fast patterns

i tried this one actually, my friend has one and loves it but he uses sticks with it.
its not sensitive enough for me though..... not even close

ok im going to bed (gotta work early tomorrow) but im really enjoying this thread.
theres been some really good ideas and suggestions, im looking forward to continuing it tomorrow

....and im still perplexed about that projector keyboard!
not even just for tapping drum beats, but the potential overall seems incredible...
this idea could stem off into something so much more than a qwerty keyboard...imagine the possibility of being able to design your own input image and make it really big with custom sections and controlls.... playing live with it on shows, etc...

I'll try this method when I get home from work. You're going to bed anyway, but you'll see this and my report when you get up! Dream of the perfect controller. :)

Just got this running on my 700p (looks better in color backlight screen)Image.. It supposedly transmits MIDI via WIFI (still trying to get that to work)..

Not too bad. For me though, I'm 6'2", so I might have a large spread.

I'm definitely able to do this easy, but again, I may have big hands.

good Luck!

Yo I saw this vid clip at make magazine or hack5 or some gimp site showing how to make a motion detecting drum instrument using MAX MSP & an eyesight cam.. Was so cool cause you could see a siloette on the screen of the motion as you play.. Kind of like the PS2 games where you punch the air and it makes things happen on screen.. Will try to find..

hey thats an interesting approach as well...
somehow im thinking that the touch-screen response might not be fast enough though as alot of the palm units are not designed for receiving 1/32nd-note input

I would also expect the wireless connection to be sort of sluggish, adding quite some latency.

and i always wondered if there is a way to properly record each fingers performance as midi WITHOUT PADS.
Stumbled upon this nice thread... curious how it went since then, did you find a good solution ?

Thanks

microphone(s) and something like sound replacer or drumagog(?) that replace sounds with samples ( i used to record 3 mics(foot and 2 sticks on a cushion) and replace the hits with sample, the puin was even able to use different samples for veocity layer, not suitable for opening the hat at all tho, double pedaling would require 2 mics to avoid the automatic gun sound)
