Freeze track in T3?

I realize that since I haven't heard anything about so it probably hasn't happened. But anyway, has the freeze track feature been improved in T3?

It really bugs me that I can't adjust volume and panning on a frozen track. I understand the technical reason why it acts that way, since the vol/pan filter is simply a "plug" that can be inserted anywhere in the chain. But there are ways to solve that so I was just hoping that this has been improved in T3.

(no, render track just isn't good enough)

It's still the same as in Tracktion 2.

"To change it would require a massive rewrite of the audio engine."

I don't know that the freeze would require a total rewrite. I might be wrong.

But I do know that Beno has said they want to improve freeze.

That's just the canned answer for anything that hasn't been implemented or bugs that haven't been fixed.

No, usually when it's said, it's meant. If something would require a rewrite, it's said that it will. If it doesn't, you won't see it being said(at least not by somebody who actually has a clue).

By the way, I don't recall anyone saying that the freeze functions will require any sort of rewrite.

I have always thought about why you can not specify how far up the DSP chain you want to freeze and have all plugins that are after that specified freezed part then be able to change live, like the volume-pan, or perhaps even eq.

I think this would be the most important feature that can be added to tracktion since it would mean that you could freeze CPU intensive plugs up to your eq, compressor, volume and still be able to tweak them as you require.

I think most of us can agree.

I don't know how the freeze function is currently implemented, but I seriously doubt that complete rewrite is needed. It's not trivial to do, but it shouldn't be that hard. Just a matter of taking the time to do it.

This is a major one for me an many others.

I always thought instead of improving freezing, let's have an improved 'render track' that acts more like freeze, eh?

Please explain

I don't agree that a flexible freeze is a huge priority. It sounds like "render" is what you're after!

You can render a track, add it, and keep it in a folder with the (muted) original.

Or you can render a bunch of midi tracks and put all the original tracks in a folder and mute the folder. To resume editing just drag a given track out of the folder.

To render up to a point in the chain, disable the filters you want to tweak, render, then copy those filters to the new track and enable.

nope. That's not the most important feature that could be added

Yes, we are all aware of that. But a flexible freeze would be much much better than that. Just because it can be done now doesn't mean that it can't be done in a better way.

I mean "render a bunch of midi tracks and put all the original tracks in a folder and mute the folder". So what if you'd want to change one note in the midi track? You'd have to delete the rendered track, hunt down the midi track which is hidden in a folder, drag it out of the folder or unmute the folder, change the note, and render it again.
With a flexible freeze, you would just unfreeze the track, change the note, and freeze it again.

Now imagine if you do that a lot. Then a flexible freeze would be a real timesaver.

I'm not one of those people who maintain a vigilant watch over my "top ten features", but I do really like the idea of being able to effortlessly freeze a sub-collection of plugs. This is acheievable in other ways - but the feature, as you describe it, I would use.

indeed. It'd probably make my top ten FR list for T4, but I doubt it'd make the top five.
