The VSS3 is killer. I got this as part of an amazing bundle deal at Thomann:

what a deal !

The UAD1 scores highly on eq and compression.
As you say, yes for the vintage side.
Hard to find some alternatives...
Maybe from the Sonalksis side (but I only have the first version, never heard the mkII).

But for the "modern" sound, PoCo was unique with the Sony Oxford plugs. Now, they're native, so...
I usually set up a Plate 140 on a UAD1 and a VSS3 on a Poco at the start of a project.
same here :)
Loads of people have loads of issues with Powercores.
I've there a PoCo PCI first generation that has given me its lot of kernel panics on my old dual G4, after an OSX update (sorry can't remember which...) and install of PoCo driver 2.0
On the other hand a working Poco system does unique and powerful stuff in a PC.
On a Mac too :)

I've here a PCImkII with UAD-1s in Magma extension and a PoCo FiWi, and not one problem.

Except when I load a project and I've forgot to open the FiWi after boot
So now, I've a big reminder appearing on the screen with 20 cm tall letters saying "Start up that bloody PoCo FiWi !!!"

And yes, there's still The Virus !

I think that on the Mac platform, there are many more reasons to buy the UAD1 since you guys don't have the Voxengo Marquis compressor. It's truly a stunner .. although I don't have a UAD1 to compare it against, it certainly does something that no other non-DSP native compressor can do. It has huge character and is insanely flexible. But then again, it probly can't do the things you can do on your UAD1, but it's been rated right up there with the UAD1 comps :D

Have you guys heard it ? I own the Sonalksis compressor, Kjaerhus Gold and Voxengo. Sonalksis is fantastic for the huge buss compression sound, MkII basically is the same algorithms as MkI. Main difference is MkII has sidechain.

Kjaerhus Gold is good when you don't want to notice the compressor on the track, it can be almost invisible when set correctly.

I find myself reaching for the Marquis and Sonalksis most the time, they just rock!

On Mac ... I guess the main options are Wavearts, Sonalksis and Waves. Sonalksis would be my pick of the bunch any day, but the compressor is not really as good on tracks in my experience, it's really a buss compressor. The Arts Acoustic verb is available on Mac as is Zebra2 :D Sylenth1 / Synth1 ain't though ... which is a huge shame for you guys :(

Yes, I know that Voxengo has more than an excellent reputation :)
I've heard some audio examples made by a reviewer of my friends, but have never had the occasion to work on Marquis.

Won't they be ported to OSX ?
Maybe I'm fooling myself, but I remember something about that, but only on Intel Macs.
I'm still on PowerPC, dual G4 and dual G5, and don't really want to change
Wavearts, Sonalksis and Waves.
Sonalksis : yes ! But I also like to use it as a track compressor, give excellent results

WaveArts : I like their Masterverb, one of the best quality/CPU charge. And TrackPlug could be useful too.

Waves : guess what ? I've a Gold bundle, and I don't have used any plugs since I've got PoCo and UAD-1, except a Enigma or a Deesser from time to time...
And also because I don't have anymore f..... WUP, and don't want to pay again and again...

Post

Yeah, Waves suck no doubt. Kjaerhus Gold and Voxengo are both coming to Mac soon :D

I personally don't like most the Waves stuff except for the few that you mentioned, their R-Deesser and Enigma are the standout ones. Their EQs sound so harsh and the compressors certainly have nothing to go crazy about, same with the verbs. I personally find that Kjaerhus Gold is the best Waves replacement for EQ and compression since they have that similar clean sound.

I can see what you mean about Sonalksis for tracks, it certainly can sound awesome there, I mostly find that I prefer the Marquis on vocals though, it melts the sound more (don't you love analogies ?) :D

Sorry I only just got up so I'll grab those screenshots in a moment, I hopefully still have the project somewhere.

Cheers

I haven't had any joy finding the presets mate, when I was going through and testing verbs, I produced a ton of projects that I just rendered to send to friends and get opinions, I'm afraid I deleted most tte projects :(

Hi

no problem, I will do my best "reproducing" the same kind of effect.
Oh, and we have to talk about one think on what VSS3 is unbeatable, it's on the stereo placement, with its Rev. Balance and Early Balance setting.
I'll explain later.
Or if someone else wants to, he's welcome :)

Post

Yep, ER / Late balance is not available on AAR as it is on TC, definitely one nice advantage on the TC unit.

Hi

sorry, I haven't found time to work on samples this week.
I think I could do that tomorrow.

Wow, very very nice, when you say STW, does that mean native ? Or is that on the SCOPE platform ?

sleepless: no probs, can't wait :D

STW = SOnicTimeworks
http://www.sonictimeworks.com/p_100.php

yes its a scope plug-in....

the plug-in was more or less ported into the IK CSR suite...
same features/parameters but differences in sound.

Personally I prefer the Scope version.
-more spacious
-cleaner tails
-not audible as an effect

the main disadvantage is that it eats up the dsps on the cards like hell.

Cool, guys I'm removing the mp3s / stuff from my webspace since I need the room, looking forward to hearing how VSS3 does in comparison to AAR :D

Hi

Finally got some time, but not enough to make all files (sorry for synth and trance, maybe later) :)

As the AAR files are not there anymore, I didn't do comparisons, so I've just tweaked differents VSS3 presets. Original files on a Logic stereo track, VSS3 on a bus, send, bounce, here they are :

Original Harpsi

Harpsi Scoring Stage

Harpsi Small Hall

Harpsi Wide Ambient Chamber

Original Piano

Bigger Piano

Piano Hall 1st Row

Piano Plate

Hope it gives you more clues about VSS3.
I use it everywhere, for all kind of material : music or film sound design, where it really shines, with its balance and modulation capabilities.
