Indeed, the biggest problem with e-mu is that the roms are very scarce - but they can be obtained.
However, even without additional roms, you still have access to a great selection of presets and the comprising samples...

Well that's what they say, but it ain't easy to find the Ultra samplers, and it's close to impossible to find any blank e-mu simms. You would probably get better results using the command station sequencer to control the Sampler. This is another reason to go command station - 32 simultaneous midi channels, all controllable from the front panel of one box. Sweet.
As an aside for xx-7 owners, I was flicking through some old posts in the XL-7 Yahoo group when I came across a reference to using the command station as a wavetable synth. I love wavetable sounds (COFX Kubik2 is my fav VST) so this got me tweaking….
Each preset has 4 layers, but it's possible to link 2 more presets, meaning a single preset can actually play 12 layers (think of a 12 Oscillator synth!).
Now, using the Realtime crossfade patchcord, and by setting discreet values for each layer, it's possible to modulate between the waves using an LFO or envelope or Knob, etc.
My first results are quite encouraging, and some lovely timbres can be had from going through some of the many synth waves available. A unique aspect is that each wave has it's own filter, LFO's, and patchcords, so the possibilities can only be scratched in my lifetime.
Only think is that it's a bit laborious to set-up, so I've made one template preset (actually 3 linked presets). Thankfully this can be done using a patch editor (proteum)
This has really lit my passion for the command station again. So I'll be off spending more time on it...

sounds good... one area the RS7000 falls short compared to the command stations is in the synth section. you basically only get one osc per voice and the editing functions are limited.
on the flipside, you can sample internal sounds/samples (resampling) thru the onboard fx, etc...

Hi, i have an Emu XL-7, it's really greate sequencer ... i have recently an Alesis Micron, which is a small nice synth. The problem is the lack of knobs, the Emu has 16 assignable knobs... for midid CC messages, well, the Alesis use NRPN. I tryed several ways, i have no idee how to assign the NRPN messages to my Emu knobs. I notice Midinovela said something about posibility to use also NRPN messages!!! PLEASE HELP!

myself I own a Doepfer Schaltwer, Akai ASQ-10, Kawai Q-80 and a Alesis MMT-8
new and expensive stuff
- the mentioned Octopus really is the best I believe
- infection instruments also makes terribly nice step sequencers: Zeit and Phaedra
- less expensive is the Sequentix P3 Sequencer, has only one step row but incredible software features!
- there are also some others, like Schrittmacher or other Doepfer stuff
- older and cheap stuff:
- MMT-8: yeah, really nice. I've seen Autechre doing live acts with 3 MMT's. if you buy one, check out the buttons, they are not really durable
- Q-80: didnt use that one much. actually it has timing problems if you have very large parts.
- ASQ-10 or MPC: the ASQ-10 is an old model and has only the MPC-sequencer. Akai sequencers are really really good.
- Schaltwerk: wouldnt recommend that one. has timing problems and Doepfer did no updates after releasing it (has some nasty limitations)
for live use maybe on-the-fly-record is a topic: ASQ-10/MPC works good here, MMT-8 too (but less convenient), Q-80 afaik is not suited for that purpose
-> the cheapest solution is MMT-8, the solid solution is Akai, the most dreamy Octopus
