am i dumb???
following the "unsupported plug-in" method of installation, i can't install any plug on my otherwise well-working Receptor (i installed Kontakt2 on it and everything works very well)
here's what i do: i download Safwan Matfi's accordeon ( the very first plug on the "unsupported but knowned to work" list) on my MAC,
drag the dll into the "drop installers here" folder, hit the install button on the set-up page.. and i allways fails!!!
arrr!!

Hello Guy,
I think you might be mixing up 'Unsupported Method' of install.
This is typically what you should do:
1.) Mount the Receptor HD on your MAC (use 'connect to server, and use the IP address of your receptor).
2.) Navigate to the folder:
"/Program Files/VST Plugins/Unsupported Plugins/"
3.) Create a new folder for the plugin you wish to install
(eg. MatfiAccordeon).
4.) Copy all of the files that should accompany the plugin into your new folder, including the .dll plugin file
(Since you are on a Mac, be careful that you are installing the PC files for the plugin).
5.) From your Receptor's interface, go to the tab called 'Setup'
6.) On this page, about halfway down on the right side is a button for installing plugins. Next to it is a checkbox labeled something like "look for unsupported plugins". Make sure this check box is selected.
7. The install button should be labeled to tell you the number of (uninstalled) plugins to load.
eg. It should say "Install 1 plugin"
Press this button. With luck, the text below the button should say "1 plugin loaded successfully" (or something like this).
8.) Now, if you go back to Receptor's Mixer tab, and you try to select a new instrument on a given channel, you should see the new plugin available.
Hope this helps, Regards,
Kevin L

Hi Guy!
I would add that sometimes Receptor says that the plugin failed to install (after step 7 of looneytunes' post), and yet it actually worked. Step 8 will tell you this, if the plugin is visible.

Thanks Kevin for laying out all the steps for installing "unsupported plug-ins"
Even though i tried it quite a few times now, i indulged in following the steps you wrote for me!!! I even created the folder "MatfiAccordeon"!!!
step 7: as soon as i hit the "install 1 plug-in" button, i shows: "1 failed"...
and, no, Greg, the accordeon doesnt show up in the instrument list...
dont misread me, i'm truly happy with that machine, even more since i've manage to install Kontakt2 in it...
but still... that's bizarre aint'it???

Hi Guy,
I've been pretty successfull installing many unsupported VSTi's, and I'd like to help you further - but I'd need to get some more clues.
In the top folder on the Receptor HD, you should see a sub-filder called "Reports". Inside this, there should be a file named "System Log". You should be able to open this file on your Mac with the TextEdit application. You should specifically look in this file to see if there are error messages with the name of the VSTi plug that you are trying to install (eg accordeon.dll, or whatever the name of that plug is). Typically, Receptor will put an error in this file if the plug that you are trying to install requires a 'windows dll' that is not available on Receptor. There are ways of getting these .dll on your receptor - see this post.
Also, if you try to install the .dll plugin again, you typically need to remove some of the files that Receptor created for you in your "MatfiAccordeon" folder. These are 'XML' files with names like "MatfiAccordeon-settings-cache" or "MatfiAccordeon-Reset". If you delete these files, and then go back to your "Setup" tab on Receptor, Receptor should allow you to attempt the install again.
I have had occaisions where (for whatever reasons) my installation attempt was successful the second time. And as Greg said, I've also had plugs that reported 'failed' installation, that actually did install and were available in the instruments list.
One other thing - I don't know if you have a PC available to you, but it is very helpful to install your VSTis on a PC first, and then copy the installation over to Receptor from there. This way, you can check that the plug installs and works somewhere first, and see if there is any authorization scheme. Most of the time when I haven't been able to install some unsupported plug, it was because of the Authorization scheme.
I will look for this plugin tonight when I get home, and see if I can install it on my Receptor.
Ciao,
Kevin L

going into the system's log is a thing a do nowadays!!! because there are other strange undeletable things in my "unsupported plug-ins" folder, such as this Spectrasonics folder where Stylus, Stylus RMX, Trilogy and Atmosphere sub-folders are sitting there, undeletable because, Receptor claims, they are "in use".
Even though i want to use Spectrasonics products some day, i did not put those folders there myself...!!
talking about the systems log..
there are NUMEROUS bizarre lines...
like this:
Jun 11 09:22:10 Receptor-1 rm-host: The time is Sat Jun 11 09:19:16.271 2005^M
(just read it very closely... in 2005, june 11th was on saturday... in deed.. but aren't we in 2007?)
..
and ahem.... yes,, i'm planning to buy a PC... even though, i manage to successfully install my Kontakt2 from my MAC.
thanks again for caring...!!!
cheers

Hi Guy,
Hah! I have the same Spectrasonics warnings repeatedly showing up in my log - rather annoying. I have Stylus RMX / Atmosphere / Trilogy installed, so I only see this message for Stylus.dat. Hopefully, Muse cleans up their code that is posting these messages in 1.6
OK - we know a bit more about Accordion now - but I'm not sure I can help further with this problem. You might wish to send a note to ask the muse developers what the 'signing problem' is. I believe that Muse checks a number of things about a VSTi plugin before it allows it to be installed into your receptor (and instantiable in your instruments list). Signing is one of these checks.
So I'm guessing this instrument doesn't have a dependency on a missing .dll.
I noticed on this KVR site that Accordion is listed as "Known to work" on Receptor. I did a search on this topic, but could not find who reported Accordion as working.
I have made other synth-edit based plugins run on my system, so intend to double check this tonight on my system.
Regards,
Kevin L

One other thing ....
I am using a Mac for most of my recording/sequencing. Originally, I built a little "Shuttle PC" system just for offloading power-hungry or PC-only plugs (before I got my Receptor). Now, I only seem to use the PC for running plugs that can't run on receptor (mostly syncrosoft dongle protected plugs), and for evaluating plugs before they go on Receptor. It's weird, but a windows machine seems to be one of the more useful 'accessories' for my receptor!

KTL

I had "the signing problem" at one point just before I upgraded to the 1.5 OS. Makes sure your receptor has this version, as the "certificates" that enable the signing in 1.4 have expired.
I also had the annoying Spectrasonics crap in my log, and it took quite a lot of registry fiddling to make them go away, but it's been so long ago I couldn't tell you exactly what I did!

Hi again Guy,
So I installed "accordion" on my Receptor (using the method I outlined above), and it installed successfully.
I am running OS 1.5 on that machine - so as Hyber said, you might try to update the OS if you aren't there.
Hope that does it for you, let us know what happens.

Kevin L

allright, all those kind answers helped me a lot and now, i'm kind of beginning to get it....
just so you know, i just bought my Receptor Pro recently and since i was having difficulties getting my beloved Kontakt2 in, i got help from the Muse guys.. they gave me a beta version of OS 1.6 and i successfully got Kontakt2 in.
The thing is, being a newbie (with Receptor that is... i'm a more than seasoned electronic musician and studio guy), i dont know whether i messed up with some button pushing at the very beginning or if it's OS1.6 that's doing that little mess .. or a combination of both...
Right now, i'm waiting at the pluggorama's helpdesk for an answer from Muse guys...
i'll concentrate over the "what-i-can-do's" of Receptor (and there is A LOT) and let this little bug rest aside for a few days.
so i'll rest this case until next monday.. or until Muse guys come back at the helpdesk with a clue.
cheers all

problem solved....
Higher in that thread, you can see that i mentionned the following falty line in my systems log:
Jun 11 09:22:10 Receptor-1 rm-host: The time is Sat Jun 11 09:19:16.271 2005
It was the KEY to solving the problem.
The date being wrong, my Receptor didn't work correctly, now it does...
Thanks Greg for guiding me thru the steps to change the DATE in my system....
Case closed!!
thanks all for generous help and caring

Cool - Thanks for reporting this here. Next time I see a 'signing problem, I'll think to check the date...
Have fun with your new receptor.
