I am not sure if this was posted here already:

This thread should be granted Public Service status. Very informative. How about that Pure Compressor, from that Flux thingie (hope i got the name right). Bit expensive, but looks full-featured, IMHO. Someone tried it already?

The Flux Solera demo is very generous as it allows full previewing of the sound without any annoying beeps or time restrictions (well, 1 hour I think is the restriction, then it "locks up" and doesn't let you tweak any controls without re-opening the plugin) so I can warmly recommend it.Download SOphist wrote: How about that Pure Compressor, from that Flux thingie (hope i got the name right). I'll try to post some audio clips of it in action but be warned, it's very subtle (unless you want to abuse it) when used in a mastering context.
Cheers!

i've downloaded the demo but, woa!, so many gimmicks ... just got confused: comp, expander, angels and hypo something ... can't make much sense out of it. since i guess i won't be buying it (heavy on the $$s), maybe i won't take the time.
It looks nice, though. and your enlightened insight would be appreciated, anyway.
Thanks.

bmanic,
Thanks. Being a novice, surrounded by books, downloaded reviews, academic articles and even patents from the feds patent office, this thread you created has helped me immensely. Sincerely, I appreciate your time and knowledge. I'm trying not to say "dude".

I'm glad that this thread has been of use for you.
I'm trying to find some extra time (it ain't that easy with a crazy little girl of 8 and a half months who is constantly trying to learn to walk! Somebody please get her to understand that it is too early!
) to make some more specific posts about compression and it's uses in various situations, including side-chaining and mid/side processing.
Cheers!

Here is a quote from another thread that I thought might be appropriate here as well..

I've added the sound examples to the first page as well. As the drum loop in question is royalty free (according to the original poster..) I've added that as well. Unfortunately it is only available in mp3 format.bmanic wrote: The problem with digital compression is the lack of openness/roundness and "air". That is, the transients should come trough smoothly, without feeling "blocky". Instead of "rounding" and giving punch in a smooth manner, the plugin chokes and makes the transients go ' slap! ' when it should go ' slam! '. It is very hard to describe so I'll try to show you what I mean with some audio examples:
(the following examples were made with a custom version of Acustica Audio Nebula 3. While this is a plugin and hence digital, it is IMHO one of the very few that can achieve that round transient.. well at least it's almost there! Also note that these audio examples were made from the original mp3 file which compromises a lot on sound quality!!)
[edit: added original clip for reference]
Original drum loop
Fast attack, fast release, this is how it should sound. Notice how the transient is completely squished and rounded. This is "slam!" not "slap!".
Medium attack, fast release, and this is something that the liquid mix is not capable of doing which for instance the manley can do with ease, and even much better. Notice how the transients are round and fat, NOT slappy and thin like in your examples. The individual drum hits become LARGER than the original, not smaller.
No wonder that the liquid channel makes things jump out from a mix, it's because the transients are let trough in a weird "blocky" kind of way. You can even clearly hear that each and every one of your examples have very similar 'shape' to the attack/release momentum, that is, the transfer curves of the compressors might all be different but the immediate attack shape and release shape are the same.
Note: I'm not saying that digital is bad, it's not, I'm just saying that most still fail completely to do compression the analogue way, that is, "round" and "open". Instead the transients get let trough in a very "blocky" way and end up sounding slappy/thin.
.. hope my ramblings are of any use.. I find it extremely difficult to explain what I hear but I hope my audio examples show it to a degree.
Cheers!

Here are some teasers of a new compressor plugin that may or may not be released in the near future:
drumloop 1, original file
drumloop 2, original file
Cute beat, original file
Heavy loop, original file
"Round" compression on drumloop 1 (this is a bit subtle)
"Round" compression on drumloop 2 (this is a bit subtle)
Hard compression on drumloop 1
Hard compression on drumloop 2
"Center focused" on drumloop 1 (this is a bit subtle)
"Center focused" on drumloop 2 (this is a bit subtle)
"Cut Top" on snare in Cute Beat
f**ked Up Cute Beat (if you can't hear this you are deaf!)
Controlling the low-end of this "heavy" loop (very subtle effect!!)
Cheers!
