I sure remember it! And it's definately inspired by Sakamoto, innit!
Yap, tried to locate the thread thru search but couldnt find it so i had to re-record it from the old cubase project.

Anyways, that Sakamoto (the original) piece is one of those tunes which are burned into my head, like the dear hunter theme. Cant remember the right harmonies thou but i do remember the moood they create and thats enough for me :)

I've been fascinated by Michael's Harmonic Ambient Patch (yeah, the very first one -- I'll move on soon!) I was looking at how he did it, I wondered if it would be possible to do something similar using a band pass filter. I'm a relative synthesis newbie, and I've been wondering about musical uses of band pass filters, so....

Apparently, however, it's NOT possible, although I'm not sure why what I have is so far off. Just dealing with OSC 1, I set it to have the fundamental and 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 7th overtones, which correspond to the 6 wave shapes in OSC 1 of the original patch. (So, pressing C on the keyboard should yield sine waves at roughly C, C', G', C'', G'' and C'''.) Then, sweeping a band pass filter should (I thought) get pretty close to what's going on with OSC 1 in the original patch.

Sorry to ask such a dumb question, but can anybody tell me why this doesn't work so well?

Here's my patch:

What you are trying to do is best done by using Bandworks on the OSC FX page and have the LFO modulate it.

Michael,

I bought the set today. My hat's off to you, they are some of the best, most playable presets I have ever heard. Congratulations, you're a true artist, sir!

Many times I thought, "How the hell did he do that??" Ingenious!

 blush..

Sometimes i just stir up alot of ingredients and try to tame the beast like in this case where i try tame a rogue patch to be less rogue'ish, and sometimes i'm lucky and sometimes i'm not :) In the end i think its about being very open minded and see what pops up if you want interesting patches.

Oh -- that seems to have a tighter bandwidth. I haven't dug into the OSC FX at all -- there's just so much to this beastie! I'm still anxiously awaiting Howard's Z2 tutorial....

Anyway, thanks for the reply. And, of course, for the patches!

Hrm, Howard hasn't been posting lately and he did mention Michael is one of his favorite preset designers. I wonder if he's busy enjoying the Z2 Oldskool presets himself! :hihi:

He's taking a short vacation...

And then... once the MSEG bug is fixed there's there's V2.0 of Howard's patches going to be released, which sort of doubles the number and includes some anxiously awaited "emulations"
