How to make that sound...

hi sound designers!

Could someone give me any tips on how to synthesize/modulate to get results like the very nice bass in this clip?

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like a square wave and modulated low pass filter. Did you try that out?

Post

Square wave it is, well, two of them and a sine wave for extra flavour, live LPF modulation, 'ave a listen:

Very nice, himalaya. What synth?
And what differences between the two square waves, detuned?

Post

Synth: Saturn in Tassman.
You are right :) they are just slightly detuned. No PWM.

are they maybe gating the amp to get that pulse part?

Maybe. Or maybe LFOing the filter.
Thanks himalaya.

Or perhaps just using the piano roll to input notes ?

Sounds almost like some kinda of delay on the repetative parts. Perhaps try a dub delay that feeds back into itself and automate the routing so you can cut the signal fast.

OR

You could play it normally (half notes), render it and open it into a slicer. Then take the part you want to repeat and cut into smaller parts (quarters) and then envelope them so they repeat in a stuttery pattern.

There is delay there obviously, but using slicers is way too much trouble, imho.
That stuttering pattern is (or can be) simply programmed in the piano roll. Then move the mod wheel with filter cut off assigned to it, as the bassline plays.

Seems like there are two square wave tracks playing - one has a multi breakpoint envelope modulating the amplitude, creating that stuttering effect, and seems to drop into the sequence every so often, with a short but fairly wet delay (1/32?) with a fast degeneration.

The main square track seems pretty 'conventional' - has the usual filter cutoff modulation going on, as already described, also with occasional delay, different division/pattern.

Personally, I don't feel that this sort of editing could be done solely in the piano roll; it seems like there is too much fluidity between the notes, ie a lot of blending going on around 2/3rds into the piece; if this was attempted in the paino roll I think the only way to get near would be to automate the amplitude env attack and I just don't think that has been done here, because the note lengths are so short that it would be difficult to accurately automate the attack.

So in my opinion, two square wave tracks, both with different delays brought in & out, one track with a fast multi breakpoint increasing in amplitude, creating a building stuttering effect.

or something...

Post

Eh, it was probably done in Fruityloops using the piano roll for note lengths.

Post

yea, seems like a piano roll could easily get that, along with some lpf modulation

Post

that stutter effect could be tempo synced gating huh?
I found the sound in this electribe mix 1 mp3:
