As far as I can tell there are only 512 patch spaces... period. What I have done is back up the factory sound set onto a memory card and my computer and then created init patches starting at the end and working forward as I need to. Most patch management can be done from the menu button in the main patch view. So basically, I'll click the menu button on the screen, create an init patch, choose write patch from the menu, name it and choose which preset I want to replace. Like I said though, I have a back up of the original factory presets in case I ever want them. So far I have replaced a good deal of the presest with my own patches and I'm not really missing anything. The presets were cool to get an idea of what it could do but I find that it is much more powerful when you start from scratch.

I've just been trying out it's capabilities as an outboard FX unit this evening. People might not realise this but it actually comes with 42 different effects plus a wide variety of COSM processors. The effects include proper models of a number of classic Roland effects including the Space Echo and Space Chorus, Boss stomps, Analog phasers and various multi fx and some quality Reverbs including a Non Linear one. The COSM processors include some great lowpass and multi mode filters (inc emulated 303 filters) and some pretty good amps, cabs, a frequency shifter, comb filter, resonator, waveshaper, dynamics processors and many more and it makes a freaky filterbank. Oh and it has ringmod etc too. Lots of this stuff you'd need a Powercore or UAD for. I haven't even begun to use these with the timestretching and TimeTrip pad/D-beams. Lots of possibilities.

I bought my vsynth (keyboard version) about 3 years ago. I love it. You can use it to destroy samples, simply as effect unit, can get everything from standard synth sounds to extrem strange fresh new tunes out of it,...

The best synth if you go for possibilities, sound-design, fresh and dynamic sounds (lots of lfo's, the step seq can control nearly every param,...).

If you are not interested in programming sounds and only want fast access to some classic analog synth sounds, then you can go for a much cheaper softsynth or sampling lib.

I can get lost in programming one sound for hours. Just because there are so many possibilities. I've put some of my self made patches onto my homepage. They are not something special. Some are really bad. But
mabe you can get some ideas.

Thanks - I'll give them a try. Got the hang of the patch management now - it's all about project management really. I bought a 1GIG SD card and have loaded it up with a backup of the factory presets, a blank project for my own stuff, and half a dozen or more other projects I've found on the net and its easy to load up a new one if I want a fresh soundset. I love the Jordan Rudess bank and the DJ Krust one is also good. Bit disappointed by the artists bank though - it has some gems but I had higher expectations considering who did the sound design (Chemical brothers, BT, Richard barbieri and several more)

Yes that's what I got it for. That being said it's surprising me how good it is for VA type stuff - looks like V2 added more of that sort of capability (like Supersaw waveforms and other stuff from older Roland analog synths). It's really very versatile.

There are some really cool ideas in there and he provides demo patches. He also has two patch banks for sale but I haven't those, so I don't really know how good they are.
