Really cool site! I like the way it's organized, and it sounds like it has a great bunch of founders with some really quality sounds (haven't had a chance to check it yet - I'm currently doing some sound design for a game and will definitely check to see if this is useful when I get home).
However, I read the description on the site, and it says "Our common belief is that sounds and samples should be free for everyone to use in their projects, commercial or not." Why is this? I'm having trouble understanding the rationale - WHY should sounds and samples be free? I mean, it's good for people like me, who have neither the recording skills nor the know-how/tricks/locations/equipment to go hunting great sounds, but why would professional sound designers support this endeavor?
I get why certain software "should" free (like the open source movement) - it's because everyone uses it, and if everyone pitches in then everyone will get what they want out of computing. But sounds are commercial resources - they are used to enhance and construct commercial products - isn't this different?

i think if people want to make money from music and sound production then they need to be more creative than the people doing it for free. It's kind of like vista - vista is garbage. Every single audio program/codec/plugin/usb/dongle/card/drive/port/thing has had problems, frozen for no reason, been destroyed, destroyed other components functionality, been corrupted, and been erased. You call that an operating system??
I'm only going to pay for a product if everything that's free sucks more than it or I simply don't know where to find the free stuff. Luckily I have a copy of win xp that I am going to reload back on that unluckly pc that got infected by vista. I know this is kind of a vista rant but dangit!! I hate that thing!
Anyway. people doing this whole software junk for money (especially if their charging as much a NI does) need to step up their game if they expect people to drop dimes on their pieces of code. I mean - i've made better presets than some of the included on these pro plugs by pressing the randomise button in FL studio.

I think you 're right josh
it's now necessary to share samples and software because creativity does not only belongs to rich and well known sound designer , anybody has the right to make music
I hope you enjoy the website , if you have suggestions or ideas , you're welcome
talk to you soon
thanks

Although I can't agree with the Vista stuff. Completely untrue on many systems. But I get the point of the post regardless. And I agree. I'll try something free if it's good enough. But when nothing free works, I seek out a commercial product.
Sometimes though, I buy something to support an independent developer. There are still several very creative products out there which there are NO free equivalents(Jamstix, anyone?).

I guess I was approaching it from the point of view of a sound designer, since that's what's on my mind for this project that I'm working on - I was all set to try to record myself kicking and punching some pieces of wood and splicing it with some noisy thwacks and shuffles, but then this site comes along and puts me out of a job (not that I was getting paid anyway
)
I think it makes sense to share sounds/samples/snippets for use in creating art such as music or collages or whatever - but I was confused because I thought you were saying that creative directors for games and movies shouldn't have to employ sound designers and recorders, and should be able to just find whatever they need online for free
that's what I didn't see the rationale for.
