Hey justin!

this compressor is so great!
Usually compressor devs all claim their comps has a fangled patented modelling technology which recreates such or such hardware non linear behaviour, so is ReaComp also designed after hardware units?

Cause from the interface and paramters it offers it looks more like a compressor which is not emulating anything particular?

Are the attack and release curves equations very convoluted?

I'd really like to hear you explaining how you designed the guts of this thing!

Post

+1

Yeah Justin,

It's like you've created a VST Distressor. Next I'm going for an LA2A type of smoothness on some ballads vocal and bass. I've expect that I can make it very smooth also. So yeah where is the analog vibe coming from?

damn
i cannot hear a difference whether reacomp is on or not (i had the same pb in reaper)
Its effect is either very subtle or im dumb (sure I am)

Do i miss something ?

thx

Good compressors can sound transparent...

But, it might just be that you don't know how to set up a compressor.....

Maybe?

did you adjust the threshold?

Post

i mean it does nothing, whatever slider i move (wet, dry, etc), nothing

moreover, it captures pc keyboard, which is no good for me...

What I usually say to my students:

1) set ratio to max, threshold so that compression is at least -6db or a bit more [-10db]. shortest attack, around 100ms release or auto.
2) set attack according to taste
3) set release according to taste
4) set threshold according to taste
5) set ratio according to taste

it always works, but if you by any chance can't hear any changes this way then you should have an ear check, no kidding.

However, I have a sneaky suspicion there's something wrong with your setup.

Cheers!

That's good to hear actually - means I'm not the only one!

I'd forgotten all about this, noticed it when they first came out. Just figured I wasn't doing something right, but I didn't care because I've got plenty of "go-to" compressors. After seeing this post I went in and tried again, and like you I can't get it to do a damn thing!

It's not user error for me, at least not as far as knowing how to use compressors or vst's/effects in general. Something's amiss here, and I will put this on the Reaper forums right away...

Edit: I just tried the ReaEQ and ReaVerb. ReaEQ seems to work just fine, but after loading an impulse into ReaVerb all hell breaks loose (and not in a good way)!

I started a thread on the Reaper forums about this:

ReaVerb! Where you get that, Willis? :hyper:

ALERT - I figured it out!

You must have "Auto Make-Up" checked. Check that box, and you'll be in 'pressor heaven - this plug is gooood!

Wow, I'm really happy... :D

BDuffy: Is ReaVerb not in the suite? I use Reaper and it's in there; it's a convo.

Post

It just tried out reacomp and I cannot hear any effect too.
But I will now check out the "Auto make up".

Post

at least in flstudio it does nothing
In reaper, i tried again, it works

:dog: Yeah, that box is easy to miss. Glad you fingered it out. :D

I think ReaVerb is only included with Reaper, othwerwise everybody would be chatting about it, and saying it's more Lexicon-like than CSR. :P The free-for-non-Reaper-owners-bundle is: Reacomp, Reagate, ReaFir, ReaEQ and ReaStream, AFAIK, but I had to check. You just never know these days.

Post

I just checked it out with "Auto make up".
I set the ratio to max and the attack to minimum.
But I still hear no difference.
The level meter for compression shows nothing. I think it should show something if it would work correct.
Could it be that reacomp works not with Cubase 4?
reafir works correct and I like it. :-)

Post

here level meters jump like crazy
But still dopes nothing to the sound hehe (in FLS)
