and IMHO its sorta like an athlete taking steroids, it can get you results quickly, but its cheating and if you get caught, you can be penalized...

I think sampling has led to a compositional creative void as people want others to do the composing(hardpart) for them.
i can't say i agree. I believe creative sampling can create compositions that would not be possible using any other 'instrumental process'. i repeat, sampling is not looping! real sampling is an aesthetic choice, not a shortcut to compositional structure. take symptohm, krishna, or any other granular or wavetable-type generators....sure they're categorized as synths, but imo i would consider them samplers...they have the ability to use pre-recorded audio as a sound generator.....that's sampling to me :)
If you are creative with samples that is fine, its not *every* one that samples. problem is its all too often that the latest hit song is a sample of a song written x years ago with some of the current production values slapped on top of it for hipness.

BEFORE sampling, you actually had to write a catchy tune or hire a ghost writer to do it for you. Also, thats not to say that I dont like hearing music made with samples, one of my favorite albums is Pauls Boutique, which is an amazing album. However, its not exactly song writing either.

very true. Personally, i'd call those remixes...i love how the industry doesn't label these songs as remixes/remakes...and allows the their biggest market (teenagers) to think that their latest favorite artist wrote the song...

i don't know how many times my teenage sister has said, 'have you heard this new awesome song'? And I continually have to tell her that, 'they didn't write that. so and so wrote that 20 years ago'

in these cases, its not sampling at all....it's just straight creative theivery

I will put it to you like this there are no more James Browns,no more Luther Vandross,no more Marvin Gayes this is back when you had primo arist great talents and their music remains forever legendary I could have gone on but
I say that to say I do personally feel guilty becasue I know if I take a slither of their music it's not mine period. Have I sampled yes I have but
out of paying homage to that artist and the love of their song and it would only be a slither just a slice I prefer to make my own samples.

Nowadays you have alot of these fly by nighters who dont have any originality everything is repetitive sounds like I heard it all before and I think it's a shame that the industry perpetuates this sort of thing.

What you have is a studio singer who cant really sing and swear their on the same plane as Luther or Marvin I mean what kind of dope are they smoking and
doing remakes or covers not even their own material just puting their own
lyrics to it a sampled up cover track and it's a hit all over again sad isnt it.

the law dictates (in the us anywho) that if a sample is criticizing or complimenting the original work than it is acceptable.

To each his own, but I know that I would feel guily building everything from loops. Some people JUST DON't HAVE THE TALENT to do certain things unless you're like Prince or Stevie Wonder. I will say this, if you're plan on doing this on a big scale you better recruit someone who can help you out. There $$$$$ in being able to program drums.
