i was meaning "...for your ROLE" in Tony's sound rig, but i'm sure it's properly said too as "SQUIDS RULE OK!!!!"
Ciao,

Oh "role" makes more sense than rule. My role is still very small in what they do but it's fun to be involved in any capacity really. You guys are going to love the new shows. While I can't say what the set list is I CAN tell you that there seems to be something for everybody and definitely some nostalgic moments that will make the effort to see the show (even if you have to travel to get there) worthwhile.

There's this one part where Phil dresses up and sings "Return Of the Giant Hogweed" that is just awesome and unexpected! : ) (just kidding).

Quick question for Squids...

In No Son of Mine, Phil plays a fill on the toms before singing the bridge - "they say that time is a healer...".

Do you know if Phil plays the fill bouncing the stick on the snare or is it the snare wire rattle brought forward in the mix from mic bleed as he plays the toms?

Also, on the same note. Do you know what kit pieces Phil used for that song when tracked in the studio, and also what effects (compression, etc...) were used (particularly on the snare to give it that snap/pop sound)? It's awesome!

Cheers in adavnce, sure I'll think of some more questions soon.

I have just seen Genesis on stage at Lyon (France) this 12 July 2007. It was great, great, great !
I was just wondering if Tony has used Sonic Reality stuff at this occasion ?

Phil most likely used his std kit that he's been using since around 1980; the snare a got deeper or shallower over the years to suit the particular recordings, but the overall Premier kit of 4 rack concert toms and either 2 floor toms or 2 low concerts has been faily consistent for a long time now. There have been variations, but those seem to be been for special occasions.

That rattle? not having heard NSOM for some years I couldn't easily place it, but it's most likely a ghosted ruff which would be consistent with Phil's playing. From listening, I would say his kit's are generally well gated for separation, but not so tight as to remove the natural ambience. I doubt a rattle would be made that prominent from the compressors unless something was set very strangely! I seem to recall seeing him using a piccolo snare around that time, which would account for it's tight sound if it was that.

Possibly on the Receptor Tony may be using some Sonic Synth sounds BUT I think most of it is coming from his Emu rack stuff and the various Korgs on stage. He could have REALLY gone nostalgic with the old Arp/Tron sounds if he wanted to though because he has those sounds in Sonik Synth. But, he's not as concerned with that as he is just picking sounds that are immediate, convenient and "do the trick" for him. He's also using a lot of sounds he used on the CAS tour.

If they let me co-produce the next Genesis album though I promise to suggest that when they tour for that there's more Sonik Synth. ;) :D

Squids, do you know if they'll be a new album? That'd be sooo cool! :)

A couple things to be aware of. One is that we did a sample session with Nick D'Virgilio from Spock's Beard and he also played on Calling All Stations (and this with me: http://www.sonicreality.com/squidscorne ... isedit.mp3 ). We sampled a Premier "Collins style" kit in a big room and it sounds huge. The other thing I am doing some time later this year is a sample session AT The Farm with Nick Davis their engineer/producer. I may even do it with Simon Collins on a Gretsch kit and we've been considering doing some sounds for BFD at some point as well.

We're also about to release a product called Ocean Way Drums that was engineered by Allen Sides who engineered several of Phil's albums. There's some good Collinsy drum kits on there as well including this technique with an AMS reverb that is some kind of PC secret production thing. I'll have to learn more about it but it was interesting. But, talking to a guy like Allen Sides who has mixed over 500 albums (can you imagine?) is GOING to be interesting!

Woops. Try it again. Should work now. This is a bunch of audio clips edited together from a gig we did playing The Lamb. I did the Tony part and Nick did the PC parts. It was a lot of fun!

Any plans to release a Tony Banks soundbank? I'd buy!

And Squids, could you please ask Mike for info on his guitar tunings, especially for Turn it On Again. And also the tab for the riffs.

Please!

:D

P.s. Anymore info on the packs for BFD?

You have a very short window of time to get it for SampleTank format. Here it is: http://www.esoundz.com/details.php?ProductID=1996 Those sounds will be available in other formats individually though.

You did ironically just miss a large bundle that included those as a bonus but that deal has expired. A one time offer called a "group buy". Gotta watch out for those!!!!

I probably won't ask Mike for info on his guitar tunings but Dale Newman might know and he loves to talk about such things. Not really being much of a guitarist myself though I don't know what exactly to ask however. That's the bigger problem. I'm supposed to do a session over at The Farm at some point here... not sure when.

BFD packs coming in less than 2 months and... some exciting news in that area.

This looked very tempting until I went to hear a demo or get some inkling of what I was paying for (content-wise). Come on Squids -- how about a demo! :)

Well, I suppose if you go to our myspace page www.myspace.com/sonicreality and you listen to the cover of Keep it Dark then some of the sounds in this are in that for a start. I would make a demo for this product but actually by the end of next month this product will actually no longer be available so... I usually like to make demos for products that we're planning on continuing to offer. This one was a bonus product because of the last Group Buy we did. We're making it available on its own too but just for a little window of time.
