honestly why do people debate the sound quality of a host?

To write a proper thesis you need to use LaTeX, no Word or OpenOffice.Org bullshit. And you need to edit your source tex under EMACS, not VI

So you don't believe that there's any kinda built-in audio engine rules like streofield - eq curve etc or some kind fairy that is messing around with the settings?

Nah...Nothing can beat the old retro vintage magic of the notepad.
About the sound, just wait...I think that Antares is making a Host Emulator FX/VST.
I wanna try the Samplitude preset to get the metallica matrix mariachi sound that I really need in my banjo mixes:oops:

isn't that one kind of for "hearing differences" though? i can usually recognize a LaTeX thesis / article easily and my workmate seems to be able to spot one a mile away even though it wasn't using the usual suspect fonts or page layouts. To write a proper thesis you need to use LaTeX, no Word or OpenOffice.Org bullshit.
as for daw sound quality differences, i'm not exactly buying the "they're all exactly the same, it's just maths" explanation even it IS just maths in the end

Seriously though, I wrote my Master's thesis in Word and it was a nightmare. I finished my PhD thesis in Latex a couple of weeks back and there were only a few
Now hosts is another story. Everybody knows that ProLogCubEndoTools sound 20-40% better
If I go insane, please don't put your wires in my brain

Amen, I've been doing pretty much all "scientific" texts with LaTeX after I realized it's much less of a bitch than Word is for that use.zeoy wrote:Seriously though, I wrote my Master's thesis in Word and it was a nightmare. TeX, as a true typesetting language, will actually do proper kerning and so forth... unlike MS Word. OpenOffice looks better to me than Word, too, on the printed page... and yet, it looks worse as a screen render (the font rendering engine is kinda choppy).z15 wrote:isn't that one kind of for "hearing differences" though? i can usually recognize a LaTeX thesis / article easily and my workmate seems to be able to spot one a mile away even though it wasn't using the usual suspect fonts or page layouts. To write a proper thesis you need to use LaTeX, no Word or OpenOffice.Org bullshit.
So, I'm not surprised when people notice differences.

I can't confirm it but my experience with SX3 leads me to believe there's some truth to that.spirulence wrote:Possibly one of the differences people notice is what the host does to peaks at or over 0 db on the master channel. I've noticed that Cubase (at least SX3) comes by default with some sort of a built in limiter on the master output. I think some older versions of ProTools do too. (can anybody confirm this?)

I did a test with SX3 where i render files to disk that peaked at +3 dB. They canceled out once i lowered the volume with 3 dB so i doubt there's some limit action going on there.fleetmouse wrote:I can't confirm it but my experience with SX3 leads me to believe there's some truth to that.spirulence wrote:Possibly one of the differences people notice is what the host does to peaks at or over 0 db on the master channel. But...but...aren't you supposed to do word processing on a word processor but final layout in a layout application like Quark or InDesign?Lunch Money wrote:TeX, as a true typesetting language, will actually do proper kerning and so forth... unlike MS Word. on musotalk.de (german only) there is a podcast where a guy "reviews" tracktion 3 and comes to the conclusion that it's the best sounding sequencer
ah, one more thing he does is testing the timing. how he does it? by inserting an instance of ezdrummer and listening to a beat
his conclusion is that "logic's timing is the best" cause "it grooves more"
well the bad thing about this is that the guy doing the review (he's called "non-eric") is a man that earns (or earned) his living as a music producer. oh well...
