Whilst reading the installation log in the Reports directory on the Receptor, I found the following message as part of said log (these kind of things fascinate me!):

Code: Select all

Your wineserver binary was not upgraded correctly,
or you have an older one somewhere in your PATH.
Or maybe the wrong wineserver is still running?
This lead me to wonder if it was possible to upgrade the Linux packages that are currently installed on the Receptor. If so, what procedure should I follow to allow me to do so?

Well, you can't 'upgrade' wine, as it's a specially compiled version from Muse (check the name of the .rpm). As for the rest, I haven't upgraded any but I have installed some programs from the Stanford CCRMA. Only install files intended for Red Hat 8.0, but to be honest, if you have to ask here how to install them you probably shouldn't bother. The risks outweigh the benefits TBH.

I am familiar with the installation procedures for Linux packages, I just didn't want to attempt to do so and corrupt the current installation were this not possible (as you said the risks outweigh the benefits). However, since Linux developers are producing updates on an almost daily basis, it would just be nice to have the latest stable packages running on the Receptor. Having already installed rpm packages of VSTi plugins, I thought perhaps i'd try installing rpm packages from the Drop Installers Here directory, although wasn't sure whether this method would support base packages from the Receptor installation (yes, i know this sounds like a stupid idea - but it might just work!). The only other thing would be to install packages over a network, from a remote computer running Linux. I would have thought this (if anything) to be the most suitable method for doing so.

You certainly *could* install packages via ssh, or you can login as root (see OGG FAQ) and get right to the heart.

I would add that the whole system as it is is extremely stable. I would be hesitant to update anything to something more "stable" as it may only be more stable in as much as the current OS is stable. Muse has done a great job of making the whole OS and WINE system as streamlined and stable as possible. I think of the whole thing more like an OS for a MOTIF or something, in that, it does what it is meant to do, and although it can do more, it is working as effecicient as it needs to to do what it does.

that message is Known as "Puke".
since "Muse" edited it to run a certain "way", "where" and "how" the message will always exist, unless they rewrite the debugging "echo' to accommodate there version.
It doesn't mean what it says.

You "CAN" Upgrade it (source's and configs on website), but "YOUR" right, why bother, the rewards wont be noticeable to the musician.
