I think i found a recipe for useful kicks now and was trying various versions + a deeper snare out when this just popped, please do me the favor of NOT trying to find the original cause this is just something that came out and i have no idea how it compares to the real thing. Fot the mix i cheated and used an exciter on the output + comp/limiter but besides that its all untampered and just out of the box (Zebra):
I used stuff from Oldskool Vol 1 + Vol 2

Lol I'm jealous, I've been listening to all the mp3 of the last 3 pages of this thread and they all sound great and above all, inspiring... How can you be so productive and creative at the same time ?
You're really doing a great job to promote Urs synth.

Productive and creative, hmmm lets take this boogie example, i was terrible annoyed by having lots of ideas but no way to finish them because i didnt had a kick for that style, and the kicks ive done so far was somewhat for softer play.
So i sat down with a synthetic sampled kick and listened for awhile and began from scratch again. All along the process i did A/B testing. At some point i felt i had something on my hands which could be sculpted into several styles of kicks, but first i had to TEST the kick. Then is was time to put up a kick track and add hihat, ohhh the old hihat was way too synthetic so that had to be delt with also, which i did and whoops i need a snare but the old snare was too gated for my taste so i tried to modify into a deeper and more acoustic sounding snare.
K, what goes with kick, snare and hh, well a bass, hmm what kinda bass, so i took the Driving Bass from Vol 1 and modified it to a new sound. Rest is history, cause once playing with the bass it sounded like an old familiar so next step was to add stuff to see how well the kick and snare worked out in that kinda arrangement.
In short, all i do is tested out in some sort of arrangement to see if it fits (frequency) where i planned it, (thats the part i enjoy the most). I dont use spectrum or analyzers or fancy stuff, i just rely on my old battered ears.
Now regarding Urs and Zebra, how many times have we seen synths come and go just because the focus was lost after the initial WAUH presentation. Well many synths dont deserve a long life span but those who really do cant do it alone. We have this situation, a brilliant developer, a great concept, i'll be damned to see this go out in oblivion just because the focus was lost for a year or so.
I get the impression that what ever Urs is doing its about love and not love with $$$ in front, but a dedication which must be admired. So how come theres not a Zebra in every studio in the world ? Well there is prolly a billion reasons for that but if someone sits out there not knowing whats Zebra capable of then it would be a shame if that was one of the reasons for NOT having Zebra.
Regading me, well i'm just a show of, i like to take things to the extreme and having fun doing it.

Today i played with 2 older patches using LFO to create rhythmic patterns. Why not use MSEG ? Hmm good question, i forgot why i liked to use LFO for these
But now that i think of it maybe its because i liked the backward kinda motion. One thing i know thou is that the MSEG gives a tiny click on certain rhythmic setups and that bothered me.
Anyways, here is an example of pads controlled by LFO, first you hear is kinda backwards playing and next passage its more like reversed:

EDIT: No need to go thru all pages for demos.. All demos are also posted in the initial starting thread.

There's been THIS much going on over here?
In my opinion your project of bringing Zebra back to focus is on its way to becoming a classic sound design thread. Not just a classic Zebra thread, but sound design in general. Hell, I think it's pretty much there already.mkastrup wrote:Well many synths dont deserve a long life span but those who really do cant do it alone. Heh, yeah - I love this thread!
However, no-one must be concerned about Zebra going to oblivion!
I mean, seriously... there's an update coming soon. There are great plans for enhancements. There is a lot going on...
That said, can't wait to get my hands on Vol2

When i spoke of oblivion it was not ment on the development flow at all, its was more the fact that we all forget to use things over time because we get caught up in something else like new equipment. Its very easy for a good project to drown in the sea of VSTi's. Zebra was about to drown in my setup and if it wasnt for Howard it would prolly just sit there doing nothing but Howard mannaged to show me that Zebra can be tamed and thats what got me hooked. I think what we see here is a classic case of a community which is behind its developer and i also think it all started with the Transmission Soundset. Finally someone picked up the torch and showed a way to a more organized side of Zebra, so big kudos to beej.

As some of you prolly know the home team had a discussion about S O U N D and stuff in another thread, it was about a Z2 - Virus challenge, well we talked back and forth for a few pages when i decided to try get inspired by one of the official Virus demos nad promised to return with something. This is what i wrote in that thread:
K here we go, i found some sparetime today and what i did was listen to some of the last part of the v-clipse2 demo. This is NOT a copy of that demo but inspired by it and i only picked from a tiny part of it.
I only used Zebra delay, didnt use reverb, and the mix is straight out of zebra so it might clip cause i used no limiter or anything. Damn hard to get the volume up without limiter heh heh
Anyways, here is my bid, be gentle to the home team
Guess its no use saying i could do it better heh heh, but really i could, but that would slow down the Oldskool project even more sooo, hope you like it

I'm going a little off-topic here because when i was making a setup for various way to approach bassline style i stumpled over an old Chorus-Delay i made 2 years ago. Its made to give life to mono synths and make pseudo stereo which it do pretty good. Anyways, i took all output thru that chorus-delay and played with the setttings, i love that chorus but never get to use it because everything comes with chorus these days heh heh

Ohh well just felt like sharing this heh heh, back to work
EDIT: Ok done, i had to split it up in 2 patches or else i would have to give up lots of modulation to the morph from clean to dirty. This type is much more suitable for playing the patch manual rather than an ARP. The demo below is the dirty one. The clean one will resemble the sound in the first demo with my chorus experiment.

Heh heh funny you mention Dimension D cause that was my target sound. I created this thing to give a Roland'ish chorus to synths. Not sure about that emulation but the chorus is good enough to turn mono signals into something really nice and smooth without obscuring the frequency.Howard wrote:Wasn't the "Dimension D" something like that (but more subtle)?mkastrup wrote:It does a VERY good chorus, perhaps i can show that later.
