You are correct in that it's neither Virus nor Zebra, but this too, is actually all using Reason's Subtractors with Reason's internal effects. Although, on this one I wasn't really even trying to sound like a Virus. This one was done just to show off what you can do with a Subtractor, whereas the other one was trying to emulate a Virus like patch.Urs wrote:I'd say neither Virus nor Zebra...jacobh wrote:And guess which synth this one is?

Heh heh im still in the dark regarding that damn arp but perhaps this is closer, pretty hard without some A/B testing. Anyways, i hope this one closer to whatever we are trying to accomplish here:

I dont care if Zebra sounds like a Virus.
Urs, you created a monster.
I have came across Zebralette and Podolski (the football player or Einstein's warmhole pal?
) and liked them right away. because they stand out from the majority of the virtual instruments.
same goes for the sounds Zebra is capable of.
at the same time, I must confess that the demo examples on your site are not really convincing.
by the way your paper on artificial intelligence is a nice read (unfortunately for the most of us only in german).
Lem and Kurzweil would love it.
once I have the funds, you will have another happy customer in me.

this is nice and shows how powerful subtractor can be in the right hands.jacobh wrote:You are correct in that it's neither Virus nor Zebra, but this too, is actually all using Reason's Subtractors with Reason's internal effects. So - how many versions of "that damned arp" have we collected so far?

sounds good... can someone post the virus version for comparison...
I enjoy hearing the differences between synths as people try to duplicate the same patch. Interesting to hear the subtle differences in filter response etc. Makes me realize how little I really know about the whole business!
I think such comparisons, taken in the spirit of open minded exploration are educational.

In practical terms, this is by far the most sensible post herekuniklo wrote:Also, I think it's useful to distinguish what a synth *can* do from what it *tends* to do. For example, I can get some very "analog" sounding tones out of Absynth and FM8, with a lot of fine tuning and tweaking and post processing. Or, I can dial those kinds of sounds up in a snap with other plugins. I think it makes a lot of sense to choose synths that have a natural tendency towards sounds you like.
This is why more and more I prefer the simpler synths that wear their personalities on their sleeves than I do the big, jack-of-all trades synths that *can* sound like just about anything but take more work to get there.
Having said that, a modular synth with the quality of Z2 is a much more satisfying playground for sound design fanatics like me than a collection of one-trick ponies. And once you've nailed the sound you want, you can use it at any time (duh!). Yes I know - if you're not careful, this whole "playground" thing can get in the way of making music...

Hmmm, what do you guys think of the concept of Tera? If I'm correct, one can switch to a view that presents you with parameters optimized for a certain type of sound. Can you afterwards switch back to the complex view and work/use this sound more?Howard wrote:In practical terms, this is by far the most sensible post herekuniklo wrote:Also, I think it's useful to distinguish what a synth *can* do from what it *tends* to do. Yes, you can load "simpler view" sounds into "the complex view".Urs wrote:Hmmm, what do you guys think of the concept of Tera? BTW: I found Tera very interesting a few years back, but somehow I always felt that the sound was relatively cold/clinical (I use the past tense because I deleted from my computer since I got Z2). Following the routing in Tera is not easy, to put it mildly. Hats off to Harry anyway for an interesting product!

Now that sounds sweet
Apart from the subtractor and xhip examples nothing I've heard comes even remotely close.
Does anybody have the midi? At least then we'd have another chance of replicating the example with the latest batch of vsti's.

I must second that, the original still totally sounds incredible, there is a certain dirt to the sound and the filter is so smooth and silky sounding.
I'd love to see the programming on the original sound, does that use unison or is it just 3 oscs detuned against each other ?
