I'm pretty new to the VST scene but I've been trying for a while now to sort out a sampler. I originally needed to use taiko drums, but after finding no vst instruments for them, decided to make my own samples. But I've had some problems.
I could only find 3 reasonable samplers. Simple Shiny Sampler simply didn't work; when I loaded the file and played the note, it just didn't play anything. Then there was sampletank which was simply too limited to know what it was like without buying it. Then I found the paax software and went as far as buying a program since it worked except for an annoying reverb on the samples, which I assumed was a drawback to get you to buy the full version, when in fact it was a program flaw. There are ways to get around it but I don't really want to set everything to max volume so I can barely here the files I loaded just to avoid the reverb.
So, my questions are:
1. Are there any acceptable free eastern drum VSTis?
2. Are there any acceptable free samplers not listed above (acceptable meaning I can load a sound, assign it to a note then hear the sound perfectly when I play the note)?

Unfortunately being able to use the samples I had made me realize that they weren't all that good. I'm not so experienced with these instruments, so I can't accurately identify them, maybe someone here can.

In this video, the soundtrack between 1:23 and 1:26 demonstrates the kind of percussion I'm after. They're also used really effectively in the bars around 1:53. I'd be really grateful if anyone could identify them, even more so if anyone could point me in the direction of some decent samples or a VST instrument cheaper than Stormdrum (or maybe even free?).
