A bit off topic but:

I have to say I really love this thread, it's about as close as I can get to watching a professional sound designer hone his craft. My work and travel schedule don't really permit me to take any classes at the local community college and to be honest I don't know if they'd even cover this aspect of music. I'd probably have to go to sound engineering school to come even close.

This and the Z2 vs Virus thread have been really great to read and learn from. A big thanks to you all! :hail: :D

(And I'm really looking forward to the updated Howard does Z2 bank, I can't wait to see what's been done with the XMF filter given your history and knowledge of true analog filters).

Thx Brian, i think the drive is my old music gene trying to multiply and hopefully influence people who wasnt around when the synth explosion happend. The old farts i represent rarely get any notice anywhere cause its sooooo oldskool heh heh. In denmark we call it the grey gold meaning people who still got a few things worth sharing/using.

There must be littery thousands of (retired) musicians out there with extreme synth knowledge and nowhere to use that knowledge. My hope is we will see more of these people pop from out of nowhere in the future.

Nice to hear that CM is looking this way :)

Regarding Howards upcoming patches, heh heh he is sitting on a timebomb, i have a faily good idea of whats coming ;)

Ok, about those basses, well i made another demo which i think is better at telling where to use these kinda basses.
I spend most of my young music year with early Alan Parsons Project, things like I Robot and stuff. I remember those basses as soft sounding sequenced basses. With some minor touch they could go for Giorgio Moroder type of basses if filter was more open and decay more snappy.

When i talked about those basses i also mentioned Moroder, so i gave it a shot to night and it was one of those things i could sit with forever but i got to move on. I cheated a bit with the mix cause i added some EQ on the final mix and put in a stereo expander besides using a limiter.

I think most people know this tune :)

How to fake a cymbal, hmmm Cymbals are very complex sounds and hard to recreate. So for starters i tried to go for a faked ride cymbal. For this to work i had to figure out which harmonics was the most important, in short i draw the harmonics in Spectroblend by trial and error method until i felt i had something. Now there are probably 1 trillion other ways i could have checked that cymbal but i ended up with doing this :hihi:

Besides that it also gave me a chance to see how the acoustic like snare and bassdrum worked in other genres. I doubt i'll manage to get realistic cymbals ready for Vol 2 but i got to start somewhere :)

Now someone might ask, why the heck make such a boring/non dirty south/non techno-trance thing, well the simple answer to this is... its fun :P

I tried look up on synthesis for creating cymbals but the given workarounds was wayyy to complex for me to even bother, also tried the phaser thing but to many harmonics gets muted by that so i went for additive synthesis and painted the harmonics i felt added to the overall sound. As it is right now it needs more sustain and i got to find harmonics for the CUP on the ride. After that i will try for a mix of harmonics between the cup and the edge. Once i have cup, middle and edge it will be time for some small randomization.

At present state i tried to take the decay down to single hit hihat lenght and that works but getting open hihat feel is H A R D. In the demo the MUTED ride you hear is infact the open hihat im trying to create whereas the ride first comes in with the organ. It has more release but is missing all the above things i mentioned.
