A quick story for you guys.

A few weeks back I was involved with creating backing tracks for a singer's project. One of the tunes required was an upright bass and vocal duet. That's difficult, because the upright bass had a really exposed part, not to mention being only a duet. I needed an upright bass sound that would sound realistic without a rhythm section to hide the nuances of realism.

I had a total of two days to create all the backing tracks, so I had my Motif set up, because the sounds are easy to use and sound nice. However, the upright on the Motif just didn't have that natural, organic tone I needed. I really couldn't skimp on this track, so I loaded up the ManyTone upright bass.

Here are the results:

Let's see if you recognize the tune. :)

You don't have a double bass? This sounds great, but programming jazz is :uhuhuh: :P

Didn't know the song, so I googled it. The bass sounds great, by the way - I'd love to buy it one day. It's just that I don't think jazz should ever be programmed

I still love you, though  :hihi:

No, I definitely know what you mean. I would've brought in a player to record, but the deadline and budget of the project wasn't permitting that... :(

Well, technically, you can't sequence jazz due to what defines jazz (besides the stylistic implications)--you can't program true improvisation, reactions between players, etc. That stuff is all characteristic of being in the moment, and is ultimately what makes jazz what it is.

But this really is a broadway tune... is that different enough from jazz to make sequencing it okay? ;)

:hihi:

Hey, as long as you get paid, mate :)

I was only being half-serious - I know what it's like when you're getting paid a limited amount to do something; you have to do what you have to do.

I'm pleased that you were sad you couldn't get a player in, but why don't you have a double bass?? They're so beautiful, and you'd be a monster tree player

Tree player. :hihi:

I'd love to have an upright, but they can get pretty expensive, so for now I'll stick with the thunderstick.

Actually, did a jazz gig tonight for the first time in ages, and it was great fun - I'm incredibly shithouse, though

I can't play quietly very well at the moment, due to my rock gigs :hihi:

The difficult thing about playing quietly is you have to play with the same intention that you would when you play loudly.

Heh ... I actually thought the opposite and figured he should have a + sign added at the end of his nik.
"The" Jazz+
;-)

I think this track is one of the best sequenced tracks I have heard out of the ManyTone Upright Bass. The fact that it is basically alone with the vocals and it really sounds like a real player did the track! In fact ...This was probably harder to sequence than it would have been to play Live.

I highly respect Greg's work here! It shows that feeling and detail can come from samples. I Love the track too....awesome Greg!
I am glad the artist let you post it.

The more I listen to this....The more I love it!!!
Tell the singer that she really shines here! Production is fantastic too!

Can you tell us more about her?

Precisely - not easy if you're not used to it

Agreed. I propose:

I gotta bump this....
This tune is awesome.
Greg told me a bit bout the singer and it blows me away.
For those that have not listened yet, a bumpo.
Tell her I think this is a very nice track Greg! I hear a natural vocal that sounds so real, and is very hard to achieve in a studio. Kudos to her!

She's got something...as does your sequencing!
