it basically acts as a dedicated cpu for hosting (in most cases) massive vst chains and instrument layers. Its for people who don't think running three reaktor 5 vst layers provides a phat enough sound. It gives you a whole mess of vst slot to stick all the flipping plugins you can throw at it. If you've ever wanted to do a ni akoustic piano/eastwest strings/rob papen's predator/stienberg hypersonic/cakewalk dim pro vst combi while syncing to video to compose a complicated movie score with oodles of effects - then receptor is probably the answer.
if you've got the money then it will do wonders for your fx/vsti creativity...

The Receptor is a dedicated computer running an efficient variant of Linux whose purpose is to play VST instruments and effects. It's optimized for live performance, but works well in the studio as well. If you don't know what VSTs and VSTis are, then this is of no use to you. But if you are a performing musician who would like high quality sounds on stage, but can't get what you need from a laptop machine, it is a great solution.

it's not a card. It's a hefty hardware unit. You can use it for virtually any vst plugin. KVR's database actually lists, for every vst plugin, their receptor compatibility (if it works, if it's known not to work, if nobody knows if it works...) if you haven't noticed that by chance...
