Ultra Focus Install

Has anyone installed Ultimate Soundbank's Ultra Focus? It is an unsupported plug that supposedly works. I dropped the Ultra Focus.dll into the vst/unsupported folder and was able to authorize. I have 1.6 Receptor. But now when I attempt to open the plug, I get the following error:

UVI engine error
could not load plug in
error id 2

I have not loaded the samples/presets yet.

Thanks,
Kirk

Hi Kirk,

I have UltraFocus, and it works great for me.

I posted some installation instructions here some time ago. The gist of it was that I needed to create some (XML) wrappers for the install to work. I took my Ultra Focus folder from a PC (after being installed on the PC), including .dat files and any preset files, and copied this to the unsupported folder. I added the XML wrappers to the folder, and then did the normal "unsupported install".

Since USB doesn't make its presets in FXB/FXP form, you need to select presets from the UltraFocus interface, and save them as Receptor 'Singles' (to change programs from Receptor's interface).

Overall, UltraFocus works great. It swithes presets almost instantaneously (much faster than Spectrasonics Atmosphere or other ROMplers), and it complements other ROMplers quite well. I think it covers more 'Digital Era' synths than other ROMplers.

Hope this helps, Regards,
Kevin L

Kevin,

Thanks again. I will give it a try and report back. I noticed the USB website has a download for the presets,

http://www.ultimatesoundbank.com/ultraf ... oc=support.

"On PC/Windows systems, if you have any issues copying the preset folder, here is an archive that we hope will solve your problems. It contains two directories. Each directory contains same presets but sorted differently: one by synthesis type, the other by sound type. You should copy the "Ultra Focus Presets" subdirectory of one of those directories (the one you'll prefer) and create a shortcut to this directory next to your plugin dll."

Would you use the new preset file or just use the one off of the disk?

Hi Kirk,

I think I stuck with the default. I think that was by synthesis type.

Honestly, I don't think it matters much though, especially if you will be saving all of the programs as Receptor patches (which won't have the category groupings that USB sets up).

For me, I created Receptor Banks (like "Bells", "strings", etc), and had sub-groups within each bank for machine type (eg Analog synth, PCM, etc).

Kevin,

Some success. I now can pull up UF in the edit menu in Receptor. I cannot pull up any patches using UF in the edit window. When I click on presets it says "no presets". When I click on Receptor's factory or patch, only patch 001 appears. it is referencing a blank file, 000*patch 1.fxp in banks and patches file hiearchy. I still have the .dat, .dll and preset files in the unsupported folder. I do see the presets under samples folder. Do you know what I am doing wrong?

Thanks,
Kirk

Update:
Since the plug in name ("Ultimate Sound Bank Ultra Focus Stereo 2 Stereo") on the mix page matches what is listed in the banks and patches folder, I am under the impression this is wrong or needs to be changed. I would also love to change the plug in name to simply Ultra Focus, but less of a concern. I am not sure how to get the correct patches to this folder. When I did the install, I did get a failed response. But I can see UF's interface in the edit menu.

Hi Kirk,

I didn't have to do anything special to get the presets (just dropped the UltraFocus folder (intact, as it was installed on the PC) into the unsupported folder.

I'm guessing there may be one of two ways to get UF to point to the correct presets folder:

1.) there is a place on the "back Panel" (in the editor, where you first entered your serial number) where you can point to the correct dir path

2.) you need to change an entry in the registry where UF caches this location.

'2' is not exactly a user operation, but I'm guessing we could get UF to work by updating the registry. I will need to double-check this at home to help further.

Also - just checking - I assume you have already completed authorizing UF on the receptor?

Kevin,
I did authorize UF on the Receptor. Might my problem be that I copied the .dat files directly from the CD versus from my PC? My problem is I could not transfer the files from my upstairs PC to my Receptor. The Receptor is down in my studio connected to my Mac. I copied the .dll and presets, created a folder on my Mac called Ultra Focus and dropped .dat, .dll and presets into this folder with the hml file into the unsupported folder. The install failed, but UF opened in the edit window.
Thanks,
Kirk

Hi again Kirk,

I vaguely recall at sometime (could have been the case with UF, can't remember) that a plugin reported install failed, but the plug instantiated and worked anyway.

That is a remote possiblility about the .dat files not transferring from the CD (but I doubt it). More than likely it is a path issue, where we need to point UF to the correct directory for the presets. I'll double check my system and advise what to do later.

Kevin,
Update. Reindexed plugs by holding done multi key and pressing power 3 X. Then UF was gone. Reloaded .dll, .dat and presets with HML file into unsupported folder and did install. This time Receptor say install file succeeded. I will try to get you a picture of my HD so you can see the file structure. But, it appears UF is looking to Receptor's Banks and Patches folder for the presets. I have one patch (.fxp) in that folder. I can see all of the samples (preset folder) in Receptor's sample folder. For some reason all of the .fxp's are not loading into the banks and patches file. I am going to try and load the .dat files from the PC.

Update:
Finally got the patches to load. Spent hours rearranging the file original file hiearchy transferred from the UF install on my PC. The original structure was:
Ultra Focus folder
- Ultra Focus subfolder containing .dll, UF1.dat, UF2.dat, .dat shortcuts, preset shortcut, hml file
- Ultra Focus Presets containing presets sub folder which contained all presets

Here is what worked after trial and error - Deleted .dat shortcuts and moved preset subfolder into UF sub folder. This is not the hierarchy that existed after an install on my PC, but it worked. Thanks Kevin and Rick at Muse for all of your help. Rick spent a considerable amount of time with me today. Great customer service. Now I can go back to learning how this box works and making music.
Best,
Kirk

Ha!

I just fired up my Receptor, and found that there were no Resources describing the path to the presets (unlike Atmosphere and others) - So I was just about to recommend that you make sure that the file system is exactly how it was installed on the PC (given that the program probably assumes a fixed location for the data). Sorry you had to figure that out the hard way.

Congrats for getting it going.

By chance, if you have Charlie, you can do all the same things to bring it up. I REALLY love the sound of Charlie for B3, and use it quite frequently!
