Well, keep in mind that differences in time that seem huge on a wave editor can be impossible to actually perceive with ones ears in real time. To me, differences of .002 seconds or less are inaudible with most material. Just curious, but how close do YOU get your samples to make them work the best? I've been zooming in and cutting samples right at the first sample before the silence ends at the beginning of a sample. Am I just being too anal about this?

The best test I know of is to load the sample into Tracktions sampler and play it at the pitch it loads at. If it feels 'in time', without perceivable latency, it will work.
The general rule would be the sharper the transient, the closer you will want to be to the first sample.
