What I still can't figure out (and I apologize if it's been covered already) is how do you get the browser in v2 to see your directories? Nothing happens when I click on the folder or anything in that area, and I see nothing in the preferences about folders...?

I think that's it (quoting Jens) :

In the folder you installed SC2 to there's the folder 'database' containing two subfolders: 'patches' and 'samples'

'Patches' is where the references to your sample-programs go to and 'samples' is where the references to your .wavs go to.

You can add references by right-clicking and dragging the original folders and then chosing 'add shortcut here' from the explorer-menu which pops up when you drop them.

After you have added new references you need to refresh the database - you can do this by right-clicking in SC2's browser (using the included .exe doesn't work here and makes SC2 crashing my hosts).

Thanks, sinkmusic! That's kind of unusual, and less than ideal, but hey - it's free! :D

Thanks.

Yes, of course !

@ Jake :
What i don't get is that i do SEE the kits in the patch browser : i have made a shortcut (pointing to the folder where i keep my samples & kits) in the "patches" folder. But when i click/double click/drag on them, it does nothing.

Cheers
Are the actual files in subdirectories, while you created the shortcut to the directory in which they sit? If so, you may be only clicking on icons that represent the subfolders, and won't be able to access the files. I think you have to create a shortcut for every folder (or put the files in the same folder...) Look at the small icon beside the files in the interface's browser. If you see a folder instead of a P in a tiny cyan box, then SC2 isn't finding the file itself. If you see the P, I'm lost, too.

it's unsual yes, but once you get used to it I think it is in fact ideal.

I was thinking about this on lunch...it's very customizable and economical, which is cool, but then again, I don't want to be mucking about making shortcuts when I'm looking for inspiration whilst composing...

But then again, this rocks. I love that it's got a sample-preview feature; it's amazing how many samplers miss this.

I don't know, i have to check :
I have made only one shortcut to my "samples" folder, which contains all my samples and kits.
When i opened SC2, it was seeing all the kits automatically.
I have hundreds of subfolders, making shortcuts for each ones would take hours :-o , i hope i don't need that because it would be close to a showstopper for me, and make me stick to SC1.

Thanks for taking time trying to understand what i am doing wrong, i appreciate a lot ;)

I have been playing a little with it, and it really has good things.
But, if you have some SFZ files with some advanced programming, dont expect that the sc use it. By example, if you have for the same layer and the same notes several samples, that you programmed to play randomly, by example, and staccato, SC simply ignores this, and always plays the same sample. Also, if you have a SFZ file with keyswitching, SC loads all the wav files simultaneously, instead of the proper layer according to the keyswitch you pressed. Just in case anyone is dealing with SFZ files and want to know.

Ok, I am still stuck.
I see the "P" as i should.
I have also made some more shortcuts :
one for a subfolder where i have a bunch of samples & kits, and also another one pointing to a folder in which there is both the .kit file AND the samples.
Everything is displayed as it should in the browser, but i can't load anything (well, i can load samples, but i can't load any patch, may it be .kit, .akp...).
(And it is freeware now, it wouldn't very gentleman to ask Claes about some support)
Grrr !

I also have one 85Gb folder "c:\samples" with 1000s of /sub/sub directories where I put everything including SFZ and SF2. I created two shortcut folders to the same "c:\samples" location. One in database/patches and one in database/samples and then use both (sample and patch) refresh options. SFZ and SF2 are listed in the browser as patches. Waves are listed as samples.

SinkMusic:

Your graphic indicated that you had created a shortcut to the soundfile, not the folder. No P showing. (SC2 will show an image of a folder if you mistakenly create the shortcut for the file instead of the folder.)

I have to admit that I don't have Battery or other drum programs, so I know nothing about kits, etc. Is CS2 supposed to support these formats? (Were you able to load soundfonts and sfz files correctly, so you could see them mapped and play them?)
