if you've shopped at audiomidi.com you get their magazine, there's an interesting interview about amps/sims in the one that arrived today. It gives a rudimentary overview of distortion, amps...why low powered amps are all the rage. It's not a bad read if you weed out the sales pitches...

Cool. Thanks Hink, I'll check that out. I was looking at the all-tube Epi stuff, especially with the cool mods available, and I can get that stuff for next to dirt. If you have a valve amp, and you have a space where you can turn it up to crunchy levels and if your talent is such that you have the balls to play with it cranked up there, then there's much to be said for being able to simply turn on an amp and get tube sound without any fiddling.
I could either take my PA amp and speaker plus a computer plus a small mixer, or I could take my DeLuxe and maybe a drive pedal. It takes about as long for my amp to warm up as it does for my PC to boot. And they are about equally fragile. If I only take one speaker they weigh about the same.
It's a moot point, because I rarely play guitar out; I'm not really much of a guitar player (electric guitar is my 4th instrument).

Have you checked out the Line 6 modeling products?
Especially the UX2 or X3. I own the UX2 and also Amplitube 2.
I keep going back to the UX2/Gearbox for the tones I need.
I know what you mean by not being fufilled my modeling sounds.
But the UX2/Gearbox prints what you record directly and this also saves
CPU. So in essence, it is more like an amp versus modeling software.
I will probably also get the new X3 as it has tons more amp selection.
I also like the bass amps. I usually record my bass parts through the UX2,
then sometimes add Ampeg SVX to sort of then re-amp that sound.
Obviously, it also depends what guitar/pickups/technique you use.
I use a Gibson Explorer, a Fender Telecoustic and a Squire Strat for my guitar work.
I am very happy with what I get out of the UX2 (Clean/crunch and dirty as hell!).
Anyway, just a suggestion as the Line 6 UX2 is very moderately priced.
I think it has been by far my "biggest bang for the buck!"

P.S. As far as your demo mp3, try to use a much heavier drum sound.
It might also make your guitar sound better by osmosis!

Have you considered a THD Univalve? It can get good sounds at reasonable volume and depending on the power amp tube you can bring the output down to 4 W (w/o using the Hotplate). A new one might be outside your budget, but a used one might fit. Given the ability to mix and match tubes, you are not stuck to one sound. So it can adapt and evolve according to your needs.

I had a heart to heart with myself over these last few days and realized I wasn't writing enough genuine metal to spend on a Bogner Uberschall which is the only amp I've found so far that sounds exactly like what I wanted in that realm. I'd rather just wait on those recording rather than compromise any more.
So, I took a look at the things that are composed but not recorded properly in the Sabbathy-Zeppelinish realm, and the tube amp that was both affordable and versatile enough to get me started collecting tube amps was the So-Cal 50 half stack from Epiphone. So I bought one as well as a Line6 Tremelo and a Line6 Verbzilla (godlike). Coupled with my Boss GT-8 and my Tonelab, I should be OK for tone and effects for a while. BTW, I got the So-Cal Head and half stack for only $499 (nearly half price) since it went on sale at MusiciansFriend.com. If anyone is reading this, they should jump on that deal because this is quite a versatile amp:
Next purchase will the the Orange Tiny Terror, though a guy I work with may sell me a Peavey XXX for $600 (I don't think I will like it but I'm going to try it out). I could probably turn around and sell that for $700 or $800 if I was patient, though.

The Line6 effects are getting better and better, though. Have a listen to the demo MP3s of the Verbzilla. Shoegazer heaven.
