yes as to the cost, you proved it...2k for a collectable...I buy guitars to play, not collect and tbh the best Les Paul I played for my tastes is an Epiphone, the neck was better, there was no tone difference I heard.
I have an Epi LP myself and am quite satisfied with it for what it is. But I replaced the pickups with active EMGs because I needed balls to the wall hot output on it. It has no resale value, which is another thing to keep in mind. Gibson's are pretty good at holding value, unlike most off the shelfers. Not trying to be a 'company man' so much here as to be comprehensive in how to look at things once you invest in one. It won't impact me good/bad if no one reading this thread actually buys a Robot Guitar. I just think they're cool and worth knowing about. Plus, this is only the limited edition. There will be a production line to follow at some point, and an SG line with the RG technology.

It was one my half brother bought for his son when he was young. At the time he still had is transperformance les paul plus one of the first jimmy page signature models. The funny thing is it was my half brother who pointed how good the epi was...it was he that noticed it had a similar slim taper neck, and it was he that forked out a lot for the jimmy page model. I'm sorry, but 2k is too much for a guitar in my book, I'm not rich...not even close.
Cool. I bet the JPage model is worth a ton, now. I'm not rich either, but I've got around 2K in my strat at this point. Money well spent, imo.

BTW, many new guitars come with better pick-ups than those that come stock in a Les Paul, I admire your tactic there but let's be reasonable...I'm probably going to swap out the pick-ups on the les paul.
New guitars that cost $400 each with 'better' pups than a 2K Les Paul? Occasionally, maybe, depending on taste and intended function. The 490s are nice, man. Vintage tone, high output, quiet, etc. Perhaps you meant equally priced guitars, and in that case, it would be down to taste. People buy a Les Paul for lots of reasons, but chiefly I think its for how they sound and for feel. The added bonus is that they have a 'status' quotient, too, and I agree with you there that that's not what makes me play or want a particular guitar. But once I get an actual Les Paul, I won't mind that I can recover a decent amount of the sale value in a resale, if necessary. Bonus, imo.

Don't fret (pun intended) it's not just Gibson, I think Fender is just as bad, (and any artist "signature" model, there you pay even more for two names). I know you work for Gibson and am a company guy, I get that and understand it. But one more point about the robot comes to mind, how much will it cost to fix when it breaks? I'm sorry, I just do not want a guitar that's smarter than me
Well, it's not like a computer where you have to replace the whole motherboard if something goes wrong with it. I imagine repairs could be very reasonable for it, depending on what breaks. And once in mass production, it could get much less expensive if they sell enough of them. On the plus side, if it breaks at a gig, it's still a normal guitar that you can tune manually. :)

it's funny because my warmoth strat is still the best guitar I ever played. I've told the story before, but how I got it and for how much is funny. The pick-ups are worth more (but only the emg 89 was bought for it)...of course that's a fluke thing to happen and doesn't happen everyday. However what's ironic is I think one of it's best features, not being a fender, not being a brand name means it's worthless. Even if I hit absolute rock bottom it wouldn't be worth selling, so I figure it's mine forever.

I do have to admit I really dont sell my things, I'm sure my Akai dps12 must have some value, but I doubt I'll sell it. It's stored away for over a year now, it hasn't been recorded on in 5 years and it's in fine working order. But I have something against selling things, so resale value never enters my mind when buying a guitar. Once I buy something I intend to keep it until it's no longer functional (then I save things "just in case" or strip them for parts).....and yes, it drives my wife crazy :hihi:

Wow. I want one of those robot guitars, damn.

Mark Kozelek would love one too, I'm sure.

This is über cool. I'm more of a strat man but this got me thinking...
