Midi echo

If I am recording a midi part using a controller and an external sound generator driven through a midi interface, how can I record into MuLab but not echo the notes to the generator? I have tried to do this but I can't see any way of setting it up so that I can send midi in but not echo that midi data back out again. Sometimes it is easier for me to drive the synth directly using a midi patchbay rather than echo it through the sequencer so I can do some external midi processing or merge with other data that I don't want to record.
Thanks

You must have your MIDI Out set as an output somewhere in your routing, as otherwise MU.LAB won't output any MIDI at all. It doesn't "MIDI Echo".

I want to point out that I am not talking about outputing midi in general but just echoing what is coming in. Other sequencers I have used have the flexibility to allow midi input, play sequenced midi out but not allow midi input to be echoed at the output. I start up Mu.Lab. I create an empty sequence part. I set the midi interface in the part property panel. If I play a connected controller it is echoed through to the midi out. Nothing else is changed from startup and there are no racks setup. If I don't set the interface in the part property then nothing will be output but that is not what I want. I just want the midi input not to be output.

The MIDI Interface in the part property panel is the output for the part. With that part selected, your MIDI input is directed to that part's output. If you don't want that to happen, don't do that. Set up a part that doesn't have its output directed to your MIDI Out.

Thankyou for the response. What you said made sense to me and I thought "oh of course, why didn't I think of that." But when I tried it would not work. I created a new blank part on a new track. I thought I could record to this part and set the output of the blank part differently from the existing parts. But when I tried this I found whatever I set the output to on a given part it would change the output port for all parts. I tried this using the part property panel. Maybe if I try setting the output to a rack rather than a port directly and then setting the port in the rack that will allow me some independance of output port. I'll try that next.

Ok now I solved it. I have to assign a different rack to each part output and then within the rack choose a different output port. That seems to only way to choose different ports for different tracks or parts. Like I said choosing a output port directly in the part property makes changes globally. Racks are the only way to deal with parts or track output properties separately.
Thanks so much for your help
