It's a cool toy - however I think the microphones lack a little "brilliance" or something, for instance when recording acoustic guitars.
Great for ambience recording, though.

i like my h2, it's got some neat features in it. i'm still having a hard time figuring out if it suffers from massive preamp noise or what, but i think it's pretty clean. asio drivers are in the works apparently. i'm still using the stock 512 meg card, 16 bit/44. nice to know there are better bit/res options in the device though should i get a bigger card. the built in metronome makes it a good tool for jotting down song ideas, you import it into the DAW and you already have a skeleton to work off

Really useful. I've been recording lectures at 128 and capturing sounds for sampling at 24/44.1. For the price and size of the reocrder I'm happy with the sound quality.
Regarding the H4 vs. H2, I remeber the H4 being much more sensitive to low and high frequency. Although much of this probably due to the screen around the mics on the H2. The size of the H2 made it more useful for me so I returned the H4.

I absolutely love my H2. It is great for recording my child's toys around the house and for outdoor treks through parks, streets, and buildings. I am able to run the H2 as an a/i on OSX 10.5 easy when I need to bypass my current a/i. With a 2gb sd card, and some nice lithium energizer batteries you are set to have fun.
The only downside was getting Leopard to recognize the H2. But a prompt update from ZOOM fixed that issue.

I spent all day walking around the city capturing some city sound samples with it(H4) in my shirt pocket with no problems.vurt wrote: main prob for me was the size of the h4, portable to me means small, the h2 fits in my jacket pocket with no probs.
The H4 will act as a stand alone, but has only -10dbV line outs. The mic pres are only marginally adjustable via the software and IMHO the unit would be far better without them (and the added weight/size)
The 2 onboard mics are amazing. I did some acoustic guitar recordings with them, and even without the mic modeling on (which IMHO is also pretty worthless) they sounded 90% of what I usually get from a pair of 414's and 4 figure preamps.
It's biggest drawback is it is very sensitive to wind noise, even with it's clown nose windscreen. I've built a very lightweight little baffle for it that seems to do the trick nicely from some light rigid plastic covered in muslin and foam, and a bit of velcro.
I wish for an updated version sans the mic pres, mixer/4 track mode, mic modeling and cheese effects, that charges itself when wall wart powered, is USB2.0 (the 1.1 interface takes forever to transfer), better handling noise, and a real case that the unit can stay in when being used(this would also help with the handling noise).

perhaps if we could all upload any interesting bits, it would be nice if we could find a place to upload to as a group rather than have it everywhere all over the place

it records acoustic guitars very well and everything else too. it costs $200usd. for that price i'm impressed and I have golden ears...no seriously the h2 mics pick up really well. and the 4 front/rear mic concept is uber cool too.
the h2 makes an awesome writing pad. hit record and start jamming...anyone in the room gets picked up clearly. pull out the card, insert it in my pc media card reader, quick drag/drop the files onto the hard drive. now my partner and I get our ideas down really easy and hassle-free.
I don't get out of this room much so I won't be sharing any ambient cityscapes or whatever...wait I think I hear a coqui outside my window, will that do?
