Opening vst plug-ins from the plugin manager.

Hi,
I was hoping I was able to open VST plug-ins from the plug-in manager, but it looks like the only thing it does is listing the ones that are added. Am I correct? If I am I would really like the ability to open VST plug-ins from the manager. Consider it a feature request. It would make it much easier to manage a lot of plug-ins not having to add them to a rack to open them. Or am I missing something here?

You are correct. I think most of us think of managing plug-ins in terms of adding news ones and deleting ones we no longer want to use. What do you think would be gained by the ability to open a plug-in from the manager?

Mmm, i also wonder why you would like to open a plug from the plug manager.
What's the goal then?
Anyway, let me also highlight the fact that, from version 1.1 on, when you choose a plug for a rack, or directly in the Modular Plug Area, you can immediately browse for a new plug on your disk, if it's not yet in the Plugin Manager.
Then the selected plugin is opened and meanwhile added to the Plugin Manager too

If you have a lot of plug-ins and like to test some of them, or simply clean out unwanted ones, it taks a lot of time to load them in a rack one by one. It would at least make it easier if you could load them from the manager itself. There are actually third party tools for this kind of thing, but I do not need anything really complex. Just like it's handy to have some sort of preview when you sort through pictures it would be nice to be able to sort and work with plug-ins in a more convenient way.muzycian wrote:Mmm, i also wonder why you would like to open a plug from the plug manager.

Sort of like the patch browser for MuSynth..?

Well, I didn't even think of that, but it's a great idea: Be able to present and load VSTs in the same way as in the patch browser. Yeah, that would work!pljones wrote:Sort of like the patch browser for MuSynth..?

But when you choose a plug for a rack, then that's what you get, no?
Maybe i'm missing the point...

It just seems, overall, like something like Tobybear's MiniHost is a way better tool for this sort of thing. You can easily load up VST instruments and effects, play with 'em, and decide which to keep or punt.cdysthe wrote:If you have a lot of plug-ins and like to test some of them, or simply clean out unwanted ones, it taks a lot of time to load them in a rack one by one. Yes, but you can not really work with it. What i want to do it look at the plug-in, delete it, remove it from loaded plug-ins etc. You can do that now, but it's very cumbersome and time consuming.muzycian wrote:But when you choose a plug for a rack, then that's what you get, no?

If i would have a large list of vsts that i want to clean up, then i would:
1 take a sheet of paper and a pencil
2 start a new MU.LAB session
3 plug in vst 1 in rack A, slot 1
4 look at the vst, play with it, etc...
5 decide whether to abandon it or keep it
6 if 'abandon', write down the name on the sheet of paper
7 delete the vst from the rack
8 goto step 3) but with the next vst, until done
9 goto the plugin manager
10 delete all plugs that are listed on the sheet of paper
To be honnest, i don't find this very time consuming.
Do you?
And anyway, this is an operation that might be done once, maybe twice a year.
Right?

Hm, 10 steps is a bit much in my humble opinion. What you describe is exacly what I have been doing, and again, I think it's time consuming. In an ideal world I would like something like this:
http://www.codeoperator.com/products_plugadmin.php
But only a couple of the features in that program would go a long way.

Ok, i see your point;
But i do think that:
1) the current plug manager system is good
2) you're requesting an even better plug manager system (requesting this is very ok)
3) making that better system do cost dev resources
4) that better system will be used only a couple of times a year by some users
I think the gain/cost balance is <= 1.0
Just fyi: a lot of concurrent things to do: see http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=203193
Hope you understand my reasoning.
If many people find me wrong here, let me know.

And that's why it's called a feature "request" and not "demand"
I'm sure I can find a third party application which can do this. However, I would still like to see something like that in Mu.Tools since it would align perfectly with an otherwise phenomenal user interface where everything is easy to do.....except for managing plug-ins
I can't wait for the sampler! I'm currently using Shortcircuit2 which is quite good I think. Top that one and I am in heaven!
