I actually spoke with Glenn Morrison who co-produced the track "Contact" using this effect alongside Deadmau5. We spoke at length about how this sound is actually formed. He told me that its crazy how often he gets asked this. If any cares still, reply and I will gladly help. I was able to duplicate it exactly in about 30min. after we talked.

Without giving away everything Glenn says, "It's the right combination of hardware (lots of it), proper compression"
I used Pro-53(my own mod patch which uses patch 225 "Cutting Through" as a template in combo with any moderate compressor and a 2-4-2(.52%, 0%, .52%) synced filter delay. I wish I had a screen shot, but I don't and I'm on the road to boot. The effects in two of the most popular/recent songs that use this effect: "Contact" by GM/Deadmau5 and "Twilight" by Adam K and Soha is formed by a continual ramping up of cutoff (over 4-bars) in combo with about 10-20% of constant resonance. Most of the pre-production groundwork is done in Ableton.
I don't know if this helps, but I hope it does.

Sounds like a minimoog to me with the cutoff freq dampening a 2nd oscillator pitched up an octave or two. Open up the cutoff freq for more of a 'plucked' sound that you hear every so often. All pulse waves...
EDIT: There is actually a preset in the default bank for Minimonsta called Ballad Bass. It's quite similiar and can be tweaked to perfection with very minimal work.

Here's a quick five minute mix I put together demonstrating minimonstas capibility to acheive this sound.... After listening to the original file after I did this, I notice the upper octave on my mix is not as present, but easily tweakable.

I had a few minutes to spare and so here is my pastiche
the tune:
http://www.mediafire.com/?7dfj1xtopft
and 2 FreeAlpha presets http://www.mediafire.com/?4gmr1heddos
one for the bass, the other for the top line.
The tune uses lots of compression, so presets on their own won't have the ooompah.

Here is the same clip but this time the bass is made in Tassman's Minimoog instrument. This has three osc used as opposed to Alpha's four.
The only difference is that I didn't use the top line in this clip.

It sounds rather raw, I like it.
This is just one sound, but the original has a few layerd, as far as I can hear.
If you have Tassman, I can send this preset to you.
