are there any considerations for making this possible?

Not sure one is needed -- just load Z2 into a freeware mini-host.

I'm not sure about the benefits. For me this would be supporting two more platforms (Win Standalone, Mac Standalone), hence a lot of hassle, while on Win you can have it easily with Savihost:

I'm not sure if there's an equivalent on Mac, but for instance the free AU Lab should easily do the trick.

+1 for AU Lab. I love it as a simple lightweight way to test sounds or just play Z2.
The only downside is youu don't get it on a Mac unless you install the developer tools. It's buried in one of the subpackages so I don't know how to tell the Installer to just install AU Lab.

And for the rest of the rest of us (Mac users still preferring VSTs over AUs, and for some good reason) this is an excellent free alternative to AULab:

Anyway, I can see the OP's point: opening a host and then opening Zebra (or whatever else) instead of just clicking on an icon and going wild programming sounds can be a hassle.
As you can see Urs, it's just a matter of our hassles against yours
Cheers.

But is it really so difficult in the application of your choice to create a template that opens Zebra automatically when opened?
That way you double click the document icon.
