Hi,

Ok I just started testing Beta v5 and first of all the installer and the new logo graphic are nice :-D

Also the disappearing knobs problem is all fixed now William - good job ;-) and I like the way they grey out.

How ever I did notice something strange after reading max's comments.

I tried testing the mini keyboard and he is right no sound on first and last keys. This is where I found the bizzare behaviour (or it might just be me)

If you play on the mini keyboard (assuming the init preset), it only plays OSC A.

If you change OSC A to channel 2 it plays OSC A & B and if you change it to channel 3 then it plays OSC A, B & C.

I found this strange and I would have thought that the mini keyboard should be playing all the channels together all the time ??

Will do more extensive test later :-D Thanx for doing the Mute buttons though !!

Cheers,
DJJ

PS - I don't notice any change when I set the master LFO's !!

I think the arrows on the interface that point to what it does (modulate, transpose, etc) looks lame. Why not just put a box around the whole thing and kill the arrows? Like put the word modulate and the 3 knobs into a grey box instead of the grey box around the word modulate only? Look cleaner I'd think. I've never seen arrows point on an interface before otherwise.

DJJ... set all the channels to 1 instead of 1-2-3.. and you will hear the sounds all at same time...

I have not totally tested yet but I was only testing in chainer last nite... in SX the 3 diff channel outs should work but I have not tested...

that would work like this:

have EVE as the output of 3 diff midi traks, channels 1-2-3 a diff channel for each... that way you should be able to keep the output of each channel running to a separate audio output and thereby also put diff FX and\or diff sends on each output. Do you see? rather, do you hear??? :)

In other words, you need EVE in a host that can have those diff outputs and an audio card that has at least 3 outputs also.

Betas 4 & 5...On the mini-keyboard there's no sound on the lowest white key as mentioned above, but no problem with the highest white key...
Functionally I haven't noticed any other problem or experienced any crashes...but as for the samples...

I'll list the safe ones first and the problem ones after...
Solina is perfect...
Suit88 seems to be ok...
CX3 from G5 to C7 there's the noise I mentioned before but it doesn't seem as loud...I've heard this same kind of noise on some free soundfonts I've d/led before too...kind of like what you hear on your speakers when your cell phone interferes...
73 does not sound like the same instrument all the way across the board as it seems slightly brighter or a tinge louder in some areas...
PE2 has a slightly different kind of noise, just an unclean sound from D4 to C5
B-3 seems mostly ok, but when I hit middle C she seems rather flat...that may just be the nature of that particular sound though...

Sorry...Can anyone else hear this? Just walk your fingers up the white keys slowly and see if you don't hear these anomalies...

Guys, thanxs for the testing so far. Here is my reply to most comments.

The small-keyboard is more like a toy, you are not suposed to use such low and high tones on a song anyway. ;) Is there since some samples will have lower tones and some will have higher tones. Also, you can split a large keyboard into zones and UP-TUNE or DOWN-TUNE each zone so it plays nice on each part of the keyboard. You can't streach a sample too much, no sampler allows that. ;)

The Mini-Keyboard only outputs channel-1, we will include this info on the manual.

The Master LFOs are not an aditional LFO, it adds and substracts the ammounts from each part LFO.

About sample noises, I will check with the sample author, Klaus, to see if this is a problem on the sample or on how it was sampled. We deal with that latter. But so far on my tests here with Soundforge the loops are clean, maybe is indeed something on the sample. Mind that some samples have a SAMPLED noise. :D Specially the B3 click on the sample-attack and the Leslie noise that goes up and down. :P

We don't plan to make EVE output 3 channels, since the idea is to use EVEs internal mixer, is much easier to handle.

Max, about the keyboard being too small, I usually don't look at the keys, I just go playing the note I want to be the "stop" zone until it stops playing. ;) But if more people wants we can add the numbers.

BTW: For next beta I will add a smother on the VOLUME+MUTE+PEDAL so when you do a fast change on the volume it doesn't click.

William ok but still... on the gui keyboard... understand about not using the low and hi ends in a song... the point is not that...

it's this: if you have the darn thing visible, then maybe either make the lowest and highest keys work, or cut them off... or make then red or something so people understand.

secondly, tho it's a 'toy'... it is still handy to quickly see where you set the zones to, eh? So... if it had some sort of fast visual referance, like the C0,C1 etc... that would help.

another thought that I don't know if it is possible would be to have more than one zone possible per sample.... such as you could then set the keys from C0 to C1 AND the keys from say C3 to C5 active for the A sample. Then say for the B and C samples, you could have other zones that made either solo or mixes of the ABC samples along the keyboard... see what I mean? but it might not be possible... or it maybe that you could do it by have a 'mute' parts of a zone feature... crazy idea or ????

So maybe I don't understand the intent of the 1-2-3 outputs then... can you provide an explaination plz?

thanks again :?

INFO

For next update I will fix the Amp-LFO wich is not working. Also, the PAN-LFO was going from 50% only, not 100% pan, I fixed that as well. I found several small things related to the LFOs.

Update latter today.

NEW BETA UPDATE 6
  • Added PitchEnvelope selector for each OSC
  • PitchLFO speed is faster, much better now, can be used for vibratos
  • LFO PAN now works properly
  • LFO PAN waveform set to PARABOL was TRIANGLE before.
  • LFO Masters now works. It adds or substracts each part LFO, is not an extra LFO.
  • Changed the order of the signal on the final MIX. Now LfoAMP works
    properly.
  • Used the LfoAmp filter smoth for the entire volume control. So when
you mute or switch the volume fast it doesn't click.
  • CPU usage optimized, several code changes around the synth.
  • Fixed Envelopes Minimum-Values
Before it was too fast and clicking on Release specialy. Now it
doesn't click and is still short enought.
  • Small updates on the Wavetable code
  • Grey keys on the keyboard

Hi William,

Just finished downloaded and install Beta v6

Ok do you want the good news or the bad news ??? lol

Firstly, it sounds much better now and all the modualtion seems to work as I would expect. And great idea with the pitch envelope selector, got some nice sounds now :-)

Ok the bad news,

1. When you play on the mini keyboard now, the level meters don't respond until you let go of the mouse button (not tested it with midi input yet) !

2. A patch which seemed to be ok before now has some kind of stuck loop point :-( I will email you the patch in question. Just start playing it in an arpeggio fashion and you will hear a nasty loop starting to creep in.

Cheers,
DJJ

Thanxs bud, number two is easy to fix, I will check that out latter. About the keyboard, I will check that.

NEW BETA UPDATE 7

Here I fixed the VU updates and also the note-stuck when Velocity splits were upper zero.

Hi William,

I have started to experience a stuck not on v7 which hasn't been in any other beta so far. I have send the patch via email.

Also after giving the notes a good run through and listen I found similiar problems as other people in some samples.

73 --> F0 to F1 seem dull compared to the rest of the keyboard
73 --> F1 to F3 this zone has a difinate "click" at the start, obviously just a more dominant attack in the sample. But it is very noticable.

PE2 --> C#1 to C#2 seems to be a softer timbre than the rest of the keyboard.

Suit88 --> G#2 --> G#3 has a a noticably larger "hammer" sound at the attack stage of the samples. Again this stands out quite a bit.

Wurli --> C#4 & upwards sounds duller than C#3 --> C#4. Again this sounds like a "hammer" sound nuance.

Ok I realise that most of this is probably due to the sampling process, but some of them are worse than others.

Ok I just got it to crash out on me too. Caused an unknown exception. All I did was open a song I had saved (to check the VU meters).

I shut cubase down and tried to reopen the song again and I am now getting this error;
Error loading DASHsnd file! Code 999 - file C:\PROGRAM FILES\STEINBERG\VSTPLUGINS\DASHSIGNATURE\EVE\EVEDATA\Ensemble\WURLI.DASHsnd
Not sure what has happened !! As it was working ok a minute ago !

And it is working again now :? Let me know if you want me to mail the cubase project william ?

Ok Cheers,
DJJ

got beta 7 but can't run it at moment to test untill some other things get finished... can't afford a crash until all that other work is completed.

so... just want to restate that thought about keyzones:

Last night I was double checking my suggestion and used Terra [Virsyn] as the example and yes it can do exactly what I am thinking of... so maybe you can see and try that idea. In the terra mixer, you can do this:

pick 3 patches, on channels 1,2,3 Make the patch on 1 and 3 the SAME patch!

set the midi input to midi 1
set the voices to say 4 or whatever

set the low and hi note ranges like so:

Channel 1, patch 1:
low = c1 hi = c3
Channel 3, patch 1:
low = c4 hi = c6

Channel 2, patch 2:
low= c2 hi = c5

Ok so when you see and play what this does, creates a mix of the two patches only on certain zones while leaving a solo of the patch on other zones, you will better understand my thought for having this ability in EVE.

sorry but don't know how else to explain the idea.

basically it's about having a way to deal with the keymapping of zones in a more complex and detailed manner.

I see it 'could' be possible, but maybe it's too much hassle for you???

anyway... it's still a cool idea... 8)

Post

well maybe I have a way to do what I posted above without you doing anythng....

btw... tested 7 a little in chainer and could not break it as yet... sounds great also...

so keeping in mind what I posted above, about keyzones ... I just set up two instances of EVE in chainer, with same patches on the 3 channels and then could do what I outlined, by limiting the zones differently in each instance of EVE... pretty kewl.... it does of course double the cpu useage however, ...so if it could be done in EVE directly, that would still be neat.

I really would like to still see at least a couple additions:

1- in the numeric box that shows the transpose amount for each patch [right hand side of GUI] could you make it so we could just clik the number and type in a + or - value? Too much trouble, or????

2- again on the GUI keyboard... SOME sort of reference as to where the octaves are ...the C-2, C-1, C 0, etc..... the darn thing is so small on my screen and I have to keep counting and testing with the midi keyboard to set the zones they way I want them.... there IS room in the GUI for this and it would really help.

There could be other methods I suppose... i.e., just be able to select input for the A zone, say, and then hit two midi keys to set the low and hi extents for that zone. Possible?

anyway sounding good so far and I'll keep trying to break it in SX later today.

Beta 7...I too am getting an error on reloading a saved project in Cubase SX!
All I did was load her up and load a few sounds, save the project, close, then reopen...After I got the error I tried to open CubaseSX again and she froze/would not initialize...
After restarting my machine the project loaded fine....so this is some strange intermittent thing...I'll try to replicate this again later...
