I guess as "casual gamer" I should clear up some things about the Nintendo DS.

1) The DS has WiFi which is for online play, gamesharing (the only download function) and picture chat

2) The DS WiFi function is NOT for downloading and keeping content on the DS, unlike the PSP which uses a Memory Stick and a special licensing system for that purpose

3) The DS is NOT region locked, no handheld ever was (except for the PSP UMD Video Play, which is region locked). That means, you can play any game from whereever it was produced on the planet on any handheld from whereever it was built. Even homebrew and fangames if burned and distributed on a proper cart (we're not talking about "developer solutions" here)

4) There are several Developer Cartridges for the DS that allows it to play and use homebrew games and applications. The negative downside on these systems were that people simply abuse it for playing Rom"z" on that system. This however is highly illegal and I won't answer ANY QUESTIONS regarding that.

5) With these homebrew/developer cards, you can make your DS into a very cool controlling device, for example with the free tool DS MIDI WiFi - but you NEED a developer card for that, and some background in the homebrew scene

So what does that mean for you in short:
- There is no need to freak out, that this cart is for "Japan Only"
- You can still try to get it via an importing distributor like PlayAsia
- You can play it on any DS, it's not limited to "Japan only hardware"
- 4200Yen = ca 42USD = 27Euro // w/o shipping - it's fair priced for a DS "Game"
- Downside: The DS has a maximum frequency output of about 32kHz, much like the very first PlayStation, and not much lowend either. This results in noise/artifacts if you want to play MP3s in 44kHz on the NDS (for example with the seperately available MP3Player) - and I'm farly sure the same will apply here. So keep that in mind, please
- Downside: No MIDI synchronizing. There was a MIDI cable connection system planned once for the old Gameboy, but that never pulled off. It's not possible with DS MIDI WiFi as of now either. This software can send MIDI CC/NoteOn/NoteOff, but can't be synced in another way.

That's nice for some old fashioned eighties sounds. Bleep, bleep :hihi:

Who is "freaking out"? This won't even be released until July and I don't even own a DS........yet. I was simply reading what it said on the website. Like I said it will probably be available to everyone sooner or later. :band:

Oooh, I think I might have to buy this when it's out. Many of the games for the DS are pretty crappy IMO (mind you - I'm more a fan of the older type platform games). For 27Euro or whatever, it's a bargain.

I can't remember the connectors on my DS...is there any way of transferring the sound out into a PC? (I'd buy it just for the portable fun value anyway...).

And...who knows...this might also be a sign that Korg may release a general MS10 VSTi some day soon too? If they've done the coding for a DS, it's a small step for PCs. I always preferred the sound of my MS10 over the 20, even though the 20 has far more features.

Ooooh yeah...an MS10-on-a-toilet sounds fantastic. MS10-in-the-bath, MS10-in-bed, MS10-outside-in-the-sun-with-a-cold-beer even... 8)

Yep, it's a real deal by the KORGies themselves!

Looks interesting, there's only a sprinkle of these kind of handheld music machines for portable game devices. :O

I have to agree on the shit that's already filtered by the US and floats over to Europe, but in terms of Japanese games, there some cool treasures (Elektroplankton, Mario Party, Wario Warez, Contra 4 - though friggin hard, Zelda - though definitely NOT worth the money for what you play for, the japanese DS Touch and Learn Generation, etc).

The concept of the DS is it, what makes it unique... touchscreen, finally screenprotection thanks to closing the lids, you can "turn" the DS for certain games, with developer cards you can even abuse it like the WiiMote for MIDI usage... over 20 years old, and still going strong.

No, it's not possible as of now. There won't be MIDI adapters according to KORG. Yup, I've seen it live and in action today. It is "official", at the moment only available in Japan (according to the developers, no mention of the US and Europe market, not even if it's "handled as Game") but it's definitely not some third party product or something like that.

Maybe this will throw some more attention to the alternate synths for GB/GBC and NES, and opens a totally new market. I mean, the WiiMote is a very intuitive controller already, the GB has some cool chip sounds with that one synth, but it couldn't be synched to MIDI either, and that NES thing? Is a "special unit" with a MIDI Cable connected to it already.

We just have to wait and see.

Still the MS-20 is already available in the Legacy collection. So I don't thinkthat this will happen soon. But hey, we can still dream as I can dream of an official Kurzweil K2000/2500 VSTi

Oh man! Just seen this on 'Music Thing'. Looks awesome. This is the DS cart I've been waiting for. Japan only but someone mentioned the GUI is in English. Is that correct? If so then it won't matter it's Jap only - This will be on e-bay as soon as it's available & on that day I'll be clicking 'buy now' at the very first opportunity. An MS-10 emulater on the shitter? ..... on a plain at 35,000 feet? Yes please ;)

It's very cute... But I thought this type of thing had been around for a while?

Reason on the crapper anyone?

It'd be neat if you could link up the GBs and add to the power of the synth in a modular fashion. But that's too cool of an idea. :)

Reason 4.0 on an i-phone? It's fiddly enough on a 17" monitor!

DS's can be linked up via the wireless connection;
Several units can be connected and played together through a wireless link
