I guess as "casual gamer" I should clear up some things about the Nintendo DS.Teksonik wrote:The DS is WiFi capable but I don't own one so I don't know if you can download software to it or not.![]()
1) The DS has WiFi which is for online play, gamesharing (the only download function) and picture chat
2) The DS WiFi function is NOT for downloading and keeping content on the DS, unlike the PSP which uses a Memory Stick and a special licensing system for that purpose
3) The DS is NOT region locked, no handheld ever was (except for the PSP UMD Video Play, which is region locked). That means, you can play any game from whereever it was produced on the planet on any handheld from whereever it was built. Even homebrew and fangames if burned and distributed on a proper cart (we're not talking about "developer solutions" here)
4) There are several Developer Cartridges for the DS that allows it to play and use homebrew games and applications. The negative downside on these systems were that people simply abuse it for playing Rom"z" on that system. This however is highly illegal and I won't answer ANY QUESTIONS regarding that.
5) With these homebrew/developer cards, you can make your DS into a very cool controlling device, for example with the free tool DS MIDI WiFi - but you NEED a developer card for that, and some background in the homebrew scene
So what does that mean for you in short:
- There is no need to freak out, that this cart is for "Japan Only"
- You can still try to get it via an importing distributor like PlayAsia
- You can play it on any DS, it's not limited to "Japan only hardware"
- 4200Yen = ca 42USD = 27Euro // w/o shipping - it's fair priced for a DS "Game"
- Downside: The DS has a maximum frequency output of about 32kHz, much like the very first PlayStation, and not much lowend either. This results in noise/artifacts if you want to play MP3s in 44kHz on the NDS (for example with the seperately available MP3Player) - and I'm farly sure the same will apply here. So keep that in mind, please
- Downside: No MIDI synchronizing. There was a MIDI cable connection system planned once for the old Gameboy, but that never pulled off. It's not possible with DS MIDI WiFi as of now either. This software can send MIDI CC/NoteOn/NoteOff, but can't be synced in another way.
