Just got this month's copy of Recording Magazine. On page 72 is a two page spread reviewing SampleMOOG. Our pals at Sonic Reality are prominently featured as the devs of this fine product. A very positive review, with very high marks for execution of concept, sound quality, and ease of programming.

Congrats to Squids and Co. and IK for job well done. :tu:

You know it's good when the Moog Foundation puts a seal of approval on it.
Play what you feel and feel what you play.

I don't know about that - hopefully it's true. I always rather thought it just meant that IK/Sonic Reality paid whatever it is to license the use of the name.

At any rate, in this particular case I'm very pleased with the vibe that this instrument has.

Part of the condition of any deal like that is the cooperation and approval of quality and overall product plan. I put together the "Moog Sample Library" deal with Moog when Bob was still alive. Then when he passed it became more of an homage and Michelle Moog, his daughter who runs the foundation, really loved it even more. Mike Adams and his team at Moog Music were very concerned about the quality being up to their standards and they are very pleased with how it came out. I am sure it would be EASIER if we could just "pay for a name" but most companies will not let you just put their name on it unless they are confident it is a good thing for their image. It's not like they make SO much money from it that they can afford to not worry about the quality of the product and just "cash in the chips". This is still relatively an esoteric market... but a cool one!

Hmm... very attractive esp with membership price and etc. And a free effect through April 30th to boot (I've had my eye on CSR for some time).

Just to put a little exclamation point on this, I want to add the following:

I originally bought SampleMoog more to complete my collection of IK synths rather than a real desire to get my hands on "authentic Moog gear." I mean, c'mon--I've got tons of VSTi already that make every kind of imaginable electronic beep, buzz and swoop.

But I also know that Sonic Reality's Head Chef and Chief Bottlewasher (Squids to you), is a man of unbridled passion when it comes to this stuff. So I figure if, at a minimum, this is just another collection of electronic beeps, buzzes and swoops, it'll be the best damn collection of beeps, buzzes and swoops that ever was.

So when I get it, I give it a workout. The quality I was expecting is there in spades. The sounds are pristine. The collection is well organized and spans the full range of gear that I recall actually playing back in the 80's. Certainly representative of the work of a true gear-head like Squids.

But I was NOT expecting an instrument that was this expressive. I don't believe I actually own another VSTi that responds to my controller the way SampleMoog does. I'm not a programmer, and I don't pretend to know the technical stuff behind it. But when you move the mod wheel on these patches, the changes are not static--they are very expressive--often transforming into completely different sounds. The dynamic response to playing is incredible. If an electronic instrument can 'sing,' this one surely does. I would swear that I can make the same patch whisper, shout and give you every dynamic in between.

Specifically, my current favorite Combi is one called 'In and Out.' I can wring actual emotions out of this one. Certainly a unique ability among electronic intruments.

Am I being a bit over-the-top about this? Perhaps. But if you read the review that I cite at the top of this thread, you'll see that the reviewer apparently agrees. It's the attention to detail that makes the difference. As the reviewer indicates, you wouldn't expect this type of expressiveness from a SAMPLE based instrument. But the devs take advantage of the very potent possibilities in the SampleTank host which gives endless creative sound designing possibilities.

But like I said, I'm not a programmer. Squids & Co. save me the time by serving up some truly amazing presets.

I believe there's a demo available. Check it out. You won't be disappointed. :D

Squids, I'm really glad to hear that re Moog Music and it's also as I was hoping. For anyone who's spent any amount of time on these forums, I think there's no doubt that you're completely dedicated to and love what you're doing!

I'm also glad that the music industry is still good in this way and not like some other industries where just because someone's name is on it does not always mean much. (I guess I had become jaded.) The fact that Moog Music was particular about the quality of something before its name is put on it says a lot about them too. Also, the quality of SampleMoog has made me even more excited about the mellotron collection that is coming.

As the others have said, SampleMoog is definitely very expressive. When I downloaded the demo and played with it, I was astonished. I was expecting something very good and that would give me some of the Moog flavor, but not something that was GREAT and so musical - that could be called an actual instrument. This is definitely NOT just a collection of samples. I have all of the other IK instruments and they're a great bread and butter collection of sounds that I use all the time - there's usually some IK item on every song - but SampleMoog seems to take it a step farther. It may very well be the best instrument you guys have done to date! I think the instrument really shines too when you play around with the combis.

The other benefit is that it's extremely cpu friendly. So you have access to these great sounds, you can layer them up via the combi programs as I mentioned without even thinking about it, and you can play ultra fast without any glitches. What more could you ask for!?!

The current promotion that's going on is excellent too. On this end, I picked up CSR, which is something that I had had my eye on but that I didn't think I could afford at the moment. But now I got it for free!

AND I got all of this at a crossgrade price since I had the other IK items. So, what more can I say? Life is good if you're a musician and if you're using IK/Sonic Reality products! :D

<<<P.S. This makes me wonder if perhaps it might not be possible that we may see a similar item with Oberheim sounds at some time in the future. I know it might not be possible, but one can hope. Maybe whereas the owners of that trademark were not open to a straight-on virtual recreation (based on what people had said around here in the past) - maybe they 'might' be open to a sample-based 'homage'. Especially given your track record. Well... as I said, one can hope.>>>
