Hello, I picked up a Receptor Pro Jr in Dec, finally have a bit of time to get a live sound going...I had Ivory w/IG, Atmo and Trilogy installed. Ive been playing it in my studio thru the phones, sound is great..need a new cab for live use...1st tried two RCF310's..found that the 10's simply didnt have enough depth and trying to eq it just made it worse..nada on those...next tried the PRX512M..all this w/a small MAckie 6 ch mixer..the 512 sounded incredible..but there was a problem..everytime I held the sustain pedal, it would cut out after about 2 or 3 seconds...like a phase problem...talked to the co, they told me the unit has a built in (DSP) Gate which is causing the problem, no way to shut it off, so reluctantly I took it back, now am trying an RCF 312..the 12'speaker is giving me more depth, and Ivory sounds good...in sections...in other words..from the bottem to G below middle C, it sounds good, but from there to + 1 octave G, it sounds as though theres a blanket over the speaker..from there up, the piano sounds good..Ive only been messing w/ the Stnway D..figure once I get it to where I like it, I'll create a bank for my piano samples..
Does anyone have any ideas that I could try to clear up the mids or to get more of a realistic sound w/Ivory? When I 1st got into Ivory, I found that there were 3 Rec FX plugs loaded, Ivory sounded much better after I got them outta there. Muse told me that thats the way it is w/those, but they also told me that they use Ivory/Rec live all of the time and it sounds great...so can someone please tell me what Im missing here?
Im using the Recptr Pro Jr, a Roland FP3 as a controller, Mackie mixer and the RCF art 312.
Thank you for the help..A.

I have read some good previous threads regarding this post I started..I think I have tried just about every active 10 and 12 on the market, still cannot get Ivory to sound good in a live situation..Im almost of a mind to try a different brand piano for live gigs, I simply cannot get the meat of the piano (Ivory) to sound good thru a lot of different speaker combo's..by meat, I mean the middle registers, middle C down and up about an octave n 1/2...
My quest continues...thers gotta be a decent piano sample out there that I can use live thru a fairly simple setup...is there?

Actually our band has 4 sticks, Model II's. The drummer (V drums) and bassist each use a stick with 4 subs and Bose's packlite amp, adds another 500 watts of low end. Coverage is amazing, especially outdoors. Guitarist and me (keys)runs through 2 for quasi-stereo effect, each with 2 subs. I need 2 for Ivory.
However the best sound comes from vocals. Clear and amazing projection. The only persistent problem we have is feedback with certain mics. Since sticks are behind us, we need very feedback resistant mics. Audix works well.
We run all line and mic inputs into a stage snake and then out to the T1 Tone Modules (4). Each tone module is essentially a 4 track mixer with EQ, reverb, and other effects such as compression, chorus, etc. I always have my trusty Mackie 1604 VLZ with me in case a T1 dies. Each song's effects can be saved as scene and retrieved with the push of a button. Since are set lists are varied, we need to change the vocal reverb often.
We love the sound and ease of transportation. Other musicians are critical, do not like the lack of thump. However teh crowds response is usually very favorable and like the fact they can hear the singers.
Hope this helps.

Hi Kirk,
The Bose lit is a bit unclear for me. Their Tone modules claim to have a stereo input - is it really stereo, or do they sum up the two sides? Have you ever used keys with one stick? How portable are the sticks (in comparison to something like a 12" powered cab)? Do your guitarists re-mike a cab through the bose (or go direct from an effects unit)? How well do these work in low-power (eg small room, or practice room) scenarios?
Thanks for any hints. Regards,
Kevin L

I use one Bose PS1 and it's the best keyboard amp I've ever owned. For live performance with Ivory, try the 7 ft Yamaha grand on the close miked rock stage preset. Mess with the eq in both Ivory and the Bose presets until you find "your" sound. Run the left and right output of the receptor into channel one and two on the Bose. The Bose unit will sum left and right inputs to mono, but you can output in stereo from the Bose to the house mix if you are using one. I find the Bose makes an excellent keyboard stage monitor in larger venues.

Hi Kevin,
Great to talk again. The sticks are very easy to break down/set up and transport. The are not as awkward to transport as cabs. Since we are all in our 40's, they are easier to move than traditional PA's and wedges and amps.
Our guitarist goes line out into PODxt Live, left out into a DI box, and right out into a DI box. Each line then goes into a separate stick. We have four and he goes into the far right(#1) and #3. Sometimes we put a touch of delay on #3 to create a stereo effect. Works great on acoustic guitar.
We use the sticks in my studio (16' X 21') to rehearse. Since we have V drums, we can essentially lower the volume as needed. The are incredibly clear and allow us to hear all of the nuances of our playing. These sticks have definitely made us better listeners.
They do have stereo inputs. However, I run my receptor out to 2 sticks and believe Ivory sounds better with 2 stick than summing the stereo single into 1 stick. I plan to demo Pianoteq to see how it sounds through the sticks.
Hope this helps.

Thats a very impressive setup, dont think that I will be doing the bose..I have been trying the Yamaha 400 active mon..not bad out of the box, going to throw a 31 band eq on the situation..this may be workable...I havent tried Pianoteq yet, although I do have it installed...Thks for the feedback everyone..

Hi Kirk & A,
For me, I typically monitor out of a stereo cab (motion sound), and send aux outs to a FOH PA. The PA summs the outs to mono, so I'm never very happy about cancellations in the audience-sound. For my own monitoring, the Motion Sound (while relatively convenient) isn't very powerful or omnidirectional, or detailed.
The Bose look impressive, but it looks like a stereo PA equivalent with those is going over $5k. I'm guessing it is a 'get what you pay for' sort of thing though. Still, I often find it hard to monitor myself (against Guitar and bass cabs - when the summ of all the stage monitoring sounds like MUD, and this does make the sticks potentially attractive.
Anyway - the thought of the Bose projecting detail well does sound quite inviting. Thanks for your feedback guys.

Not to act like I am Bose rep (I am only a user), but here is a couple links to artists that use the Bose system for keys:
Alan Steinberger, highly regarded LA musician uses Receptor/Bose combo.

It is expensive, but so worth it. Oh yeah, did I mention how good B4 II, Lounge Lizard and Strings sound through the Bose system? Unbelievable clarity.
Best,
Kirk

Hey Muse guys, go check out these 2 new piano's....Im going to want to put one or both on my Receptor...

AFAIK the Bluthner is a Kontakt library meaning it should be user installable on any Receptor w/ Kontakt 2 or 3.

Since Im a new Muse user, Im not sure on this stuff..I have K2 in my Mac recording setup, but I dont have it installed on the Rec. Some of you guys sound like u know the muse inside out...so since K2 works in the rec, does that mean that any library will work running thru K2? I have Scarbee on the Mac, but there are instructions or threads here on how to install it on the Rec...on my setup, Scarbee runs thru K2..
Id like some feedback on this if anyone knows, b4 I actually go purchase more piano libs...
Thx, A.

K2 runs fine on the Receptor though perhaps not a breeze to install (yet). And yes any library that is for K2 will work (assuming you can get it authorized).ADino wrote:Since Im a new Muse user, Im not sure on this stuff..I have K2 in my Mac recording setup, but I dont have it installed on the Rec. If you have the Scarbee K2 edition, it runs fine on the Receptor as well (and requires no auth!). Lots of folks think that this is THE Electric Piano to beat in fact (and I rather agree
