While discussing another plugin in another thread it has occured to me that I haven't seen any MFM2 patches that exploit it's ablity to produce reverse delays and time stretching effects. Here is a bank of 24 presets that demonstrate these effects.

Time Manipulation

Demo 1
Demo 2

These demos each consist of two instances of Zebra (using my Zany patches 8) ) and two instances of MFM2. I adjusted the wet/dry mix, delay ratio and LFO depth on MFM2 while recording the drums for the first one but other than that what you here is just the evolution of the patches themselves. Oh, and yeah these were all achieved by simply holding down a single note ;)

Simple demos

Enjoy these, most are set up to be place on a send (100% wet) and but can also be used as inserts. If you have Zebra and decide to try these out with the patches that I made... your pets/spouses will never forgive you :) Use a limiter for your protection.

Huh?!? How did you do that?!?

Wait... You didn't design it to do this? I didn't think it was a such mysterious trick.

Here is a prelim bank...

http://www.3amnoise.net/Time_Manipulation.zip

Basically, when you modulate the "Sync Coarse" or "Milli Coarse" Ratio with a ramp-up LFO using a period that is equal to the base delay time you get a reversed delay, if the Ramp LFO's period is greater than the base delay time you get a time stretching effect by a factor of the difference between the two (for example if the Delay time is 1 beat and the LFO rate is 3 beats, the time stretching factor is 3 fold).

I can only assume that it has to do with the position of the record input relative to the playback buffer and feedback path.

No feedback is neccisary to achieve these effects but a touch of feedback does create some cool effects (phase cancelation and such), but the more feedback is applied the more artifacts come into the signal (especially with pitched input). I've also noticed that when the ramp resets it creates an undesirable thump when doing the timestretch trick. I find that increasing the sample rate of my host results in fewer undesirable artifacts but honestly I like the artifacts sometimes. :D

Cheers Urs, this thing is a beast 8)

The other cool thing you can do with MFM is kind of beat juggling /slicing effects. Oh, and it's even great for character compression... quite a versatile little tool, this one... :)

These are demos of two different patches processing the same drum pattern.

I'll be posting a bank of patches soon that further demonstrate MFM2's ability to bend time, the possibilities don't end here =]

Thanks Subz! I think I'll have the bank ready later tonight. I've figured out a bunch of cool stuff, just playing around this morning. In the mean time I got go have brunch with my Mommy and tell her how much I love her. =]

I wish to bear you strong children, Justin.

justin3am, your to good to us!!

IMO these should be included in the next update of MFM2

Thank You!!

Thanks guys, I'm glad you like them. I don't know Subz, I think there is already enough of my wierdness included in the factory bank :hihi:

So when is the full bank being released? I need it yesterday.

That's it... well, the one linked in the first post of this thread is it. Sorry but 24 patches is all I've got in me before I have to start working on other stuff. I wish that I had the skill and patience that Zircon, Michael, Howard and Beej have for sound design but unfortunately I don't :(

I'm sure that if you take some time to dissect the patch design herein you'll find some possibilities that I didn't even consider :)

Cheers.

justin3am,
Thanks so much. 24 patches is generous enough! These are really amazing.
